Ammonia Levels high in Liver
I am a 3 year breast cancer survivor. Lately I have been feeling unwell all over. All the blood tests came out normal but the Ammonia level (which I asked for) is now abnormally high. My neurologist at my HMO contacted me last night to see what my primary has to say about this and what further tests she wants to get done. The report came to him last Friday and my primary has not responded. I just sent her an email and she has 2 days to respond.
I have been asking for the cancer marker blood tests but each time I get refused, even with my second opinion doctor. My neurologist was frank with me in that high ammonia levels can mean cancer has spread to my liver, even though my liver blood test was within range. So, now he has me scared.
Thanks for listening.

Aren't there a lot of other causes for high ammonia? I hope it's the least problem, whatever that is.

Hi Winning ~ I hope you get my reply to your Ammonia issue. I have that too. I have had all the usual liver tests, even a liver biopsy and there was no evidence of cancer and yet, I continue to have high (80mg) which causes over body itching. When it gets too bad and keeps me awake I take Laxatone. I have gone thru lots of gene studies, CTScans and bloodwork..... nothing conclusive. I have seen all the appropriate doctors and they keep telling me to forget about further testing as usually doctors don't test for Ammonia. Now, I used to work for a veterinarian so I understand Liver and Ammonia issues. When the Ammonia gets too high the animal will usually die as their is no treatment for the cat/dog. If it is caught soon enough they try charcoal. Now, the Ammonia in humans, can cross over the blood brain barrier and cause lots of damage to the brain. But no one is treated me seriously, however, everytime someone posts about Ammonia, I hope for a miracle. Hope some of this helps.
When you blood is drawn, they can't tie a tourniquet and have to immediately put the vial in ice for transport. You are welcome to reach me here or pm me. Looking forward to hearing from you. Oh and BTW, I am 8 years breast cancer free.
