Hi all,

I am on here for help and guidance. I just turned 32 yesterday. About 2 weeks ago I started having left breast pain and noticed axilla fullness. Had an US of the axilla done last week which showed 11x4x9 mm lymph node and the radiologist suggested diagnostic mammogram and US. Went to PCP who did breast exam, confirmed felt axillary node and also felt a “mass” in the left upper outer quadrant at 1:00 on the breast so she ordered the diagnostic mammo and US. Had that done which showed intramammary lymph node at the site where the hard “mass” is felt. Rad rated as Bi Rads3 and recommended repeat diagnostic mammogram in 6 months and mentioned that this may be something “early” since I just started having symptoms 2 weeks ago. I have family hx of breast cancer and other various cancers. Also had a hysterectomy at age 27 due to endometriosis and was on HRT for 3 years. My question is, given breast pain, axilla fullness and this hard mass now being classified as a lymph node, should I push for a further work up? Everything in the right breast came back beautiful Thank you in advance

Abnormal vs. normal lymph nodes have pretty defined characteristics on ultrasound. It sounds like they appeared normal, and diagnostic mammo plus ultrasound catches most things. I’d be comfortable just doing the six month follow up unless something changed. I don’t know if your doctor would order an MRI for a Bi-Rads 3, or if insurance would cover it. Guess you could ask if you are still concerned

Usually a cancer is visible before lymph nodes become enlarged and these nodes as described above don't sound enlarged.

Did they give a measurement of the cortex of each of the nodes?

No measurements of the cortex. I’m following up with a specialist just to be on the side given symptoms and family history. Thank you for the response!

Linda, I hope everything works out for you! I just had to comment on your name. I spent time every summer as a kid at Lake Tahoe. Such wonderful memories. Last October I had a "Girls Weekend" with some college girlfriends in Truckee. We all graduated in 1980. It's hard to believe we're all this "old" now. :)

Keep us informed on your followups.
