Remember When!!
Comments
-
How about shirts and dresses that buttoned in the back--who ever thought that was a great idea!!!
-
zippers in the back are bad enough!
-
Saddle shoes....and bobby socks.
-
Knee socks with our mandatory skirts!!
-
penny loafers
-
Wrap-around skirts! Not great on a windy day!!!!
-
I remember there were little cartoons on the bubble gum wrappers. I remember penny candy. On Sundays, my dad would walk down to a little store to buy the paper and we kids would come along & each get a dime to spend on candy. The penny candy was in jars & some of them were two candies for a penny (those gummy like coins or raspberries). If you wanted to gamble, you could put your money in the gumball machine. If you got a striped gumball, it was worth 10 more cents!
-
Remember piano lessons or learning to play an instrument in school band or orchestra? Painful to the ears!
-
I remember getting stars from my piano teacher. Gold for a great job, silver might pretty good & downhill from there.....
-
remember when radios and tv's had tubes? One would go out and get replaced, then the next one, and on down the line.
-
I remember getting my first small portable radio. What fun to be able to carry your radio around instead of being stuck in my room!
-
Yup...the TV repairman would have to come.
-
Remember having gold or avocado colored kitchen appliances?!!!
-
Yes! And shag carpet!
-
or copper tone appliances. And green or gold bathroom tub toilet and sinks.
-
One of my artist male friends had a bathroom with a black sink, toilet & shower; and the back wall was a mirror!
-
Ruthbru, sounds like a unique bathroom--don't think anyone really wants to see that much of themselves in the bathroom!! I remember bathrooms, though, with black, white and pink tiles leftover from the 1950s.
-
I have a baby quilt pieced together from feed/flour sacks my gma made. They are about 1” squares.
-
JO, yes I remember clothing made from feed sacks. Hadn't thought about that for a long time!
Spookiesmom, your GMA must have been a soul of patience-- one inch squares, what a treasure you have.
-
Yes, gold and avocado green appliances and pink and black bathroom tiles. My parents had a similar bathroom to this (same exact floor).
-
My first house had that exact same pink and black wall tile. I absolutely loved it!
Growing up we had an aqua bathroom and a blue bathroom; sinks, tubs, toilets and wall tile aqua in one bathroom blue in the other. Avocado green appliances (and carpet) in the kitchen. -
My bathroom tile in my current house was aqua. The house was built in the 50's.
-
I remember that all the moms wore aprons over their dresses (which they wore all the time) when they were cooking & baking (which they did every day).
-
Hand done. Don’t think she had a machine. Yes, a treasure. I’m 71

My mom is named after her great-grandmother, who was quite the gal. She heard Abraham Lincoln give a speech when she was 12 years old, and went on to live to the ripe old age of 102. This is the baby doll quilt she made for my mom when she was born (which means it's 93 years old). My mom typed it's history, pinned it to the back, put it on a dowel, and gave it to lucky me!
-
Ruth, the quilt is lovely and what a good story!
-
I'm loving all the stories and pictures!! Such great memories! Don't forget to share those stories with your children and grandchildren--the stories must be told and written down to be passed on!!! How many of us have family pictures from past generations but the pics are not labeled and no living relative has any idea who are in the pictures??
-
Ceanna, me! I have my mother's photo album from when she was in college in the 1920s. Very few of the pictures are labeled and most of the ones that are use a one word nickname.
-
Beaverntx, I'm sure the old pics are great, but too bad they are not labeled. Maybe you can access an old college yearbook from the years your mom was there and see if you can match up photos with names!! When your mom was there, there were probably few women in college so maybe you can find pics of her and her friends. Good luck on that! I'm sure there would be interesting stories!! Maybe contact the college library and see if there are any memoirs from others from that era.
