Nerve pain-should I try medication?

I'm almost three weeks out from a unilateral mastectomy with expander. I'm doing pretty good but one of the things that bug me is a sunburn feeling on my breast that will go up to my neck. Sometimes it hurts to touch. I also get pins and needles and electric shocks. I can usually ignore the pain until the end of the day. In The evenings it really wears me down. I told my PS about the symptoms and she brushes it off as just something everyone goes through and didn't offer medication to help. Should I directly ask her for medication? Or should I contact my oncologist?

daenerys - I saw your post on a TE thread. I don't think any of us were comfortable with expanders. I'd talk to the doctor that you have the best relationship with. That makes it easier to express your issues and get well considered answers. Maybe that doc will agree to pain meds. Maybe talk to your PS and ask to have some of the fluid removed from the expander so you can stretch more gradually. I found the whole expander process mostly very painful.

deanerys30...so sorry you are experiencing pain. Although I do think what you are feeling is normal. I don't think its unreasonable to ask for some nerve pain med like Gabapentin. Good luck. Hope you feel better soon.

dtad, that’s so funny you mentioned the Gabapentin. I was just on the phone my neighbor who is a psychiatrist. She also mentioned that same medication. I had never heard of it before. It’s worth looking into. My pain keeps me from sleeping well, so I might consider asking about it.

Gabapentin really helps with nerve pain. I have several friends who have been on it.
