Thanks Rose and Ginger for your comments and information..

Rose, the treadmill has a heart monitor and I check it a lot to amuse myself. I don’t think it is very accurate but the times I had the dizziness it seemed to me that my pulse rate was somewhat higher than I remembered it ever being. However, I have noticed that sometimes the monitor shows several numbers while blinking, some outrageously high, before it settles and stays on a number that is likely to be your heart rate. My theory is (and I hope that I am right) that I was dehydrated the several days this dizziness happened. I did experience a very thirsty day after these experiences. I started drinking a lot of water while i exercise and i have not had a repeat incident. The rest of my theory is that the tightness in my chest was from anxiety (which I do take meds for), worrying about the odd sensations I had, combined with the knowledge of my family history of heart problems. I had a chemical stress test (no treadmill) in 2000 as a prelim to my knee replacement surgery and it was all clear. The doctor monitoring the test at that time told me that he thought that my vegetarian life-style was responsible for that result. I am hoping for this again.

Anyway, I will find out about my theory soon, as I have the stress test tomorrow.

Ginger, I talked to the technician today to ask about the meds that I am not supposed to take before the test. He explained to me that I will have an IV with saline in it to hold the vein open. When I have gotten my heart rate up to 80% ( I think that was the % he said ) of my capacity, they will give me the dye in the IV. I think the test stops then and they send me to lunch. When I come back, they scan me (don’t know what kind of scan it is) and they can see the dye and my heart action. They called me back later and told me that they won’t have the medicine that they need for the test till 11 am, so they asked me to come in at 11 instead of 8 am. Wow, that is so much better for me since I still am on my hubby’s old swing shift schedule. Just anxious to get it over with so I can keep on exercising without my doc not wanting me to do that.

The next step of my goal is to try to lose 20 more lbs in the next 3 months---about 6-7 lbs per month.

    peace,

    DesertStar---

Thank you!!! I take Atenolol also and i have to NOT take it tonite before the test tomorrow and I am also not supposed to take blood pressure med (Lisinopril) because i am not allowed to take any beta blockers right before the test.

This reminds me of another part of my theory that i had forgotten in the earlier post---i am still on the same doses of the beta-blockers that i was when i weighed 60 lbs more and did not exercise. I could possibly have gotten dizzy because my doses are too high now.....

Celia - the monitors are prone to funny readings. Sometimes I wet my hands with some water (not spit!) and that helps me get good readings.

I like the medicine dosage theory;, let's hope that's thje cause of your problem.

DS - once you start looking at those labels you are on the bus! Welcome aboard.

    Celia--

Extra weight can contribute to high blood pressure and you've lost a lot of it. And not needing nearly so much bp meds and continuing on a high or complex amount could cause dizziness. (However, sometimes people are put on a beta blocker to reduce sweating.) Have your bp readings been extra low? Your theory sounds like a good and simple fix--here's hoping that that's it!!

    good morning ladies

    celia

    my husbands bp was
    very high ...he lost
    25 pounds and now has
    acceptable bp readings

    i have been battling with
weight since the completion of treatments

    lost some
    gained some...and so on

    I started the F-Factor
    one week ago
    and feel great

    I met with my onc
yesterday and was down three pounds
since my last visit (4 months ago)
and down a total of five pound
    since starting diet

    correction~~"life style change"
    I detest the word DIET

    I am satisfied
full and am starting to feel more energetic

I have upped my fiber intake
big time and eat protein with fiber
    at each meal

    When I feel
    a sweet tooth coming on
    I pour myself
a cup of Vanilla Carmel Truffle tea(liptons)

it is awesome and really satisfies my cravings

or I sip on one can nutrisoda natural
    fruit flavored enhanced soda

it is a bit sweet so i add water
    and like it very cold

    no sugar aspartame or sodium
    10 calories

    it does contain ginseng extract
    and other extracts
so beware if you are on chemo
and have issues with herbal additives

I was never been big on breakfast

breakfast is must for me now
along with v-8 juice every morning

    my best to everyone

Skinny jeans aren't coming into my wardrobe anything soon either.

I went for my physical yesterday. My goal had been to hit last years weight. For the past three weeks I've been counting every darn morsel I've eaten.

Well, I wore a light skirt, I made the appointment at 11 a.m. and didn't drink anything after 7 a.m. -- and I hit last years number (and even a little better). Made my whole day!

BTW Ginger---Yes, my bp readings have been quite low, in fact, everyone who takes my bp always comments on how low my bp is.

I had the nuclear treadmill stress test yesterday. It was supposed to take 3 hours at the most, however, it took 6 hours. The tech tried to put the IV in and couldn't after 3 tries, because i have the worst veins, so he paged some guy in the OR to come and insert the IV. The guy brought Lidocaine with him and the insertion didn't hurt at all. Pretty cool stuff--first time i had the Lidocaine for that purpose.

The treadmill part was the part that i was most anxious about, but it turned out to be the best and easiest part, since i exercise all the time on a treadmill. They kept it slowed down (slower speed than i walk at), but they raised the incline 12 degrees. I finished the whole treadmill part, and didn't have to make them stop it.

The worst part of the test was the scan after the treadmill part. After scanning and re-scanning me 3 times for 15 minutes each time with no moving around allowed, they were getting weird reads with no pictures showing of my heart at times. They kept asking me if i was having a problem or anxiety because they told me that my bp kept shooting way up high in the test. I told them that i was really totally relaxed. Finally, the 2 techs (that also couldn't do the IV), called another tech to do the test (YAY!!!! a woman!!!) and she took a few minutes to set up the wires differently that were attached to me, and her scan (the 4th) of my heart worked just fine. This is after the first 2 techs had convinced me that the earlier, bad scans were because of something wrong with my heart. The woman tech said it was NOT my heart doing the weird stuff, it was the scan machine doing weird stuff.

Everyone else throughout the test told me that I was absolutely normal in the EKG part of the stress test and in the EKG pre-scan and the post scan. I am waiting to hear from my doctor what the results were of the nuclear part of the test.

Just glad that the whole thing is over. I am still leaning toward the theory that my bp meds doses are too high, now that i have lost 60 lbs.

    Thanks for all your help!

    peace,

Celia - Apart from the snafu with the IV and having to be re-scanned a couple of times that doesn't sound so awful, although 6 hours is crazy!

Hope it's just the meds. You Doc certainly isn't going to tell you to gain that 60 pounds back, so you should be in good shape!

Celia, were you getting low readings in the doc's office? I'm surprised he didn't change your bp meds. But with your history and the chest pressure, the scan was probably the thing to do anyway. I'm sorry there was a problem with the machine and the study took so long. Hoping for a normal study result. Again, wonderful progress on the weight loss. Good for you!!!

I had WW tonight and lost another whole one pound, although my home scale said 2 pounds.
So that would be 5 months with 2 pounds lost. I am on my way and promise to be better!
My friend also told me last night that she heard at her WW meeting, to eat a cough drop when you feel like you should eat when you aren't really hungry. The Halls drops work pretty well for me.

Rose---You are right, the whole experience was not terribly bad, but, unfortunately, I did do some damage to my left shoulder (while keeping it stretched out straight up) during the scan, which I did not have prior to the scan. I have been having physical therapy and steroid shots for a near-frozen, painful right shoulder. I felt the left shoulder start hurting with sharp, shooting pains during the scan, and today it is very painful. I am hoping it goes away with no long-term effects. I also caught a cold, probably from the man with a cold who was waiting for his wife in the small waiting room. He was coughing and snuffling near me.

Ginger---I HAVE been getting low bp readings in the doc office, but the tech does the bp before the doc appt. When I asked my doc if she thought that my problem was from too much bp med and beta-blocker meds and she immediately shook her head “no”. I am going to mention it again to her if this scan shows a normal heart. Also, dehydration is another possibility.

DesertStar---Now that you have mentioned it, I am amazed at myself that I DID stay calm!!! I didn’t even think about that. Thanks for mentioning it…………Also, when I read your comment to Rose about maybe taking off your prosthesis before you weighed in, I got curious and weighed my prosthesis and it weighs only 1.8 lbs. When I had the mastectomy, I came home the next morning and weighed 11 lbs less, so I guess my boob was much heavier than my prosthesis.

Jasmine---The techs were very convincing that they knew what they were doing. I go to the military hospitals (hubby is retired from Navy) and I think that what is happening is that many of the techs and docs, etc., are deployed to Iraq and other places. Our hospital has one of the major Fleet Hospital units that get sent out, with personnel, and set up in war zones. The ppl replacing them seem to be not as well-trained. These techs told me that the nuclear medicine doctor that does the all-chemical stress tests (no treadmill) has been deployed to Kuwait and so they cannot offer that test. Anyway, I am not happy with this situation, as I think better health care is needed for the retirees and the families of active duty personnel.

Now I am getting back to the business of losing more weight.

Let's hope it all gets straightened out! I've been having some issues with my shoulder and it's no fun. Given all the coming and going with the military it sounds like a miracle they got you in and the test done at all!

So do you have the all-clear to go back to the treadmill?

Celia, Sorry you had such a bad experience with the scan. We've had so many patients do those and I haven't heard of any one having clutzy techs or getting a shoulder problem. Do you think the 2 are related? Anyway, I hope you get a good report from the study. Maybe the med change cure will be all you need. Fingers crossed.

Ginger---The new shoulder problem is definitely from having to stretch and hold my arm straight up over my head for this scan. I had never felt pain in it prior to doing the scan over and over again. I have osteoarthritis and i keep tearing cartiledge in my joints all the time.

Haven't heard about the results yet of the scan....still waiting. I will try to talk my doc into figuring out if I need the med dose changed.

Rose---When my doc ordered the nuclear stress treadmill test she wanted me to NOT exercise, but i told her that i still wanted to but i would take it easier. She even prescribed Nitroglycerine Spray for me....yikes, that totally freaked me out!! However, I didn't stop exercising. I have not had another incident of dizzyness, sweating a lot,or tight feeling in my chest, but at first i lightened up on speeds and lengths of time. I have been feeling good so i am back to all my levels.

My motto is "you know yourself the best".

I'd certainly be sure I was well hydrated when I worked out. If I get going at something and get my heart rate up and haven't had enough water I am prone to feeling sick.

Since you have the spray (I assume it's in case you have heart pain) probably it belongs in your gym bag. I have one of those allergy pens and I carry it around in my purse. On the totally unlikely chance I needed it, I want it around.

The spray's not a bad thing to have, but if you're doing the walking for the treadmill/stress test, the idea is to move you to your max. So maybe that'd be beyond what you'd do on your own.

In our office some people have to quit walking quite early and be moved to an adenosine/cardiolyte because of some heart/breathing symptom. Frankly, most people who show no particular heart symptoms but can't go very long are just deconditioned. With all her working out,Rose would probably be on the thing forever!!! (Do you do the treadmill at the Y, Rose?)

hunger and dead batteries are killers on the treadmill for me.

I tried going to 80% of heart capacity in 9 minutes. That's not hard.

Now I've got a son home for Spring Break. He sure eats a lot! But I didn't buy any ice cream. He'll have to make do with healthy food. Well, alright, I did buy a slice of chocolate cream pie. I'm sure when I walk back into the kitchen all that will be there is a plastic container

Target had the Bran bite snacks. They're OK, they remind me of the little pellets that come in the birds' food.

I do take the nitroglycerin spray with me when i go exercise. Even though i feel that my heart is ok, i still think "better safe than sorry."

I also now take a full bottle of water with me and I finish it during my 40 minutes of exercise. Before my two "incidents", i had relied on their water cooler with the upside down water jug and very cold water in little dixie cups. But I didn't drink enough that way--the water was too cold and the cup was too small. Now that i have been bringing my own bottle and can have it with me and also on the treadmill, i have not had any more incidents....good sign, but of course, this is not proof...waiting for test results.

When i exercise on the treadmill at my gym, i have my heart rate go up to 100 to 118, usually about 110. When I took the treadmill test, i could see my heart rate on the screen, and when my rate got up to 129, i turned my head. I didn't want to watch. They planned to have my heart rate go up to 85% of capacity and i just didn't want to know what that was.

When Rose was talking about her son being home for spring break and having chocolate cream pie for him, it made me think of this little snack that i have once in a while on my diet. I get the Kraft Coolwhip Chocolate Whipped Topping, which is two tbsp. per serving = 1.5 grams of fat (saturated fat, unfortunately), no trans fats, 2 carbohydrates, 2 units of sugar, and no sodium. It is best when it is almost thawed out. I put a dollop with a soup spoon, probably 4 tbsp. on a plate and eat it. It reminds me of chocolate mousse, but it is not too diet-breaking for me. I don't eat meat (vegetarian) and i don't eat a lot of cheese, milk, or eggs, so i don't get a lot of saturated fats in my diet. Anyway, it is a treat and it reminds me of chocolate ice cream and chocolate mousse, but without the fats and calories. Also, it does not get me back to craving chocolate again, which is good since it took me 2 months to get off the chocolate habit, so that i could start my diet. But i bet that Rose's son would not find this treat acceptable...lol. but it is a treat for dieters. It has to be hard to have kids in the house and also the food that they like. It would bug me a bit to have a chocolate cream pie in the house, altho my hubby gets his treats too, like oreo cream pie.

Anyone else have any "treats" tips for people trying to lose weight??

I was just at Target--but after your description, Rose, maybe I don't want to go back for the Bites!!

My daytime snacks are tomato juice (makes me feel full) and baby carrots (keeps me busy for a while so I feel like I must be full!) No too exciting but at work I can keep busy and away from the candy treats that way.

Celia, your treat sounds good to me! I'm not into making too much, so in the evening I do splurge. I split a half a bag of lowfat or light butter micro popcorn with dh or I have a dish of lowcal lowfat Blue Bunny ice cream--it's a midwest brand. We just came back from the store where dh said he wasn't buying ice cream (he likes mint chip) and I did. I said he'll just replace it with a big bowl of cereal anyway!

Celia - plenty of water before the gym is important! I
usually try to down 20-32 oz BEFORE I go over there. It's the oil that keeps your cooling system working.

I don't know about little treats. When I think of tablespoons of things I think of ice cream, a heaping tablespoon of B&J can easily push 100 calories, or canned frosting. I have a sweet tooth that is hard to stop.

Bird food or not, I have been munching on those snack things.

Rose, thanks, I think I will pay attention to drinking more water BEFORE I go to exercise, like you mentioned. Actually, that makes a lot of sense too. This way you don’t go to exercise in a dehydrated state to begin with. I am lucky that I am a big water drinker—love water.

I am staying totally away from the ice cream and the canned frosting (have huge sweet tooth too), and I would not be able to only have one tbsp of any of it, so I never buy it. But, I hate the punitive feeling of dieting and doing without favorites (like chocolate ice cream or any chocolate dessert), which is why I like that chocolate Coolwhip—it is not so fantastic that you want more of it, yet it is very reminiscent of the richer, more fattening chocolate desserts. It is better visually than it is by taste ( it is ok by taste, not fantastic tho)—I would not want more of it than a few tbsps.

I also have Wasa crackers and I put a thin amount of reduced fat peanut butter on it for a snack. I get the Multi-Grain ones and put the pb on the less bumpy side. It surprises me that one serving (one cracker) only has 2 grams of fiber, because they taste like they should have 15grams of fiber!!! I drink V-8 (low sodium) with the pb cracker. Love V-8!! Very filling.

Ginger do you also like V-8? I can’t do the popcorn treat since I am diabetic and I have to watch my carbs. Those popcorn hulls get in-between my teeth and I have to floss immediately after eating popcorn, so for me popcorn is a lot of work…lol. My hubby gets Blast of Butter popcorn and also melts a lot of margarine and pours it over his popcorn. Yuck, that is sickening to me. He is the type that puts ½ a carton of sour cream and a lot of margarine on his baked potato also. I don’t use either—I like ketchup ( ppl put ketchup on French fries so why not???) or low cal salad dressing on baked potatoes.

Just curious---what are these bran pellets you are talking about??

They're "All Bran" snack packs. Little crackers, slightly sweet that come in bags of 100 calories each. They're hard and crunchy, like bird pellets. Not that I don't eat them.

I like an apple slice on top of that cracker/peanut butter snack.

Margarine AND sour cream seems like overkill on the potato to me. I can go with sour cream, but it's not "right" without a lot of salt. I've never heard of ketchup, but it seems reasonable.

Sometimes I cut cooked potatoes into smaller parts and put them on a cookie sheet. I spray them with Olive oil Pam and bake them, turning them once. They get a little crispy that way, and I can eat those without anything. I like that with green beans with a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Sometimes when you have a sweet tooth it's better to not even go there.

Portion size is the secret with ice cream. I'm trying to cut back a bit --the kind I like is 120 cal per 1/2 cup.

Right now I've got some pumpkin pie my mom made in the fridge--I don't have a son to eat it like Rose and dh is not big on pumpkin--so portion is important. It's funny I love tomato juice, but not V-8. It's interesting that they both seem filling to us.

For me the thing about the microwave popcorn is it's quick and easy so to bother to add stuff never occurred to me. Are both you and your dh vegetarians?

I might try those potatoes, Rose. My dh would rather have rice most any time, but I like a little variety.

What's with all these people eating pumpkin pie in March!

I figure they sent the pie to your house, or left it there so they wouldn't eat it. After you've had what you want it's fair to chuck it.

Unlike the half a flour-less chocolate cake in my freezer I don't think pumpkin freezes all that well.
