Starting radiation treatment in April, 2020

Hi ladies. I have started my radiation (April 9). I will have 15 whole breast and 5 boosts. My first two treatments and simulation have been a bit longer than normal due to tweaks in my settings. They assured me that next week will go much faster. My arms almost reach their limit overhead at the end. I had shoulder surgery a few years back and I feel it! I have 5 light blue tattoos and drawings all over my right chest. Have a great team that do my radiation. Warm blanket and music.
I am still working and will be going in the am before work. I hope I don't get too tired as this goes on. Ive been working ever since I recovered from surgery and hope to continue. -
Mudstick, thanks for sharing the latest with your plan for chemotherapy. It's good that you now have a plan so you can move forward. Wishing you the very best with those treatments. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers for the best outcome possible. Blessings!!!
katiej128, I'm also having hypofractionated radiation...for me it's 21 treatments which include the boosts. I started Monday. No treatment today as they were closed for Good Friday. So far so good!! Best wishes to you with your treatments. :-) Keep in touch.

How is everyone doing? I’m done with my first week and am not a fan of radiation. I know it’s quick and painless but I just feel like a piece of meat laying on that table. The techs are very nice but it’s still awkward to me. I’m constantly looking at my skin just waiting for awful burns to show up as well. Anyways, vent over! Hope you are all doing alright.

Hi Cyathea,
Were you able to get the Mepitel film?
I am 2.5 weeks out from my last radiation treatment, and my skin under the Mepitel film continues to look and totally fine. You can't tell anything was done to it.
However, in the small area near my armpit where the film rolled away, it is still red and scabby (getting less angry looking) and tender -- an indication of what I would be dealing with on my whole chest if I hadn't had the film.
It's really frustrating that ROs in North America have been so slow to adapt this simple solution. I'm lucky my RO agreed to it without an argument, but knowing what I know now, I would absolutely insist on it, or just buy it myself and learn to put it on.
The trick to applying it is to make sure there are no bubbles in the film so that you get full protection. Also, the radiation tech can check to make sure all the skin to be radiated is being covered.
Good luck to everyone undergoing treatment right now!

Hello everyone, I finished four sessions this week, 16 to go. I feel like I have a tiny bit of swelling where my surgery was and the tech agreed. It's not painful though. I've been using Aquaphor and wearing old t-shirts with bralettes or old stretched-out bras. The Aquaphor in the spray can is great! I've also taken a couple of afternoon naps, but that might just be because my schedule is upside down since I'm working from home these days. I'm taking daily morning walks with my neighbor, doing some body weight strength training, and added yoga.
-
I am supposed to go in for my initial appointment for my simulation tomorrow. I'm afraid since it's only 3 weeks since surgery it may be too soon. I can't tell if there is swelling, my breast looks so different then before surgery. I do believe it is healing well though. I don't want them to map out the area then go to do the radiation and find out it's off. Maybe I should put this off another week. I'm also getting scared of just having it done after reading some horror stories. I had so many tests, two surgeries and months of worry. I know it isn't anything compared to most of you but I'm tired and scared. Sometimes I just want to quit anymore treatment.
-
Hi VeeHow. I understand your apprehension. I'm finding that going through surgery and treatment with everything else going on with this pandemic leaves me feeling just a bit more anxious than I might be normally. I'm assuming you met with and were examined by your radiation oncologist. Whatever apprehension you may be having don't hesitate to call your RO and discuss it. All the best.

I started 1 of 15 Accelerated Whole Left Breast Irradiation With Hypo-fractionation Plus Concurrent Boost (Aka Shorter Radiation today. I’m noticing internal intermittent pain in the breast that was treated. Nothing I read about mentions this side effect. Has anyone else had this happen?
-
Finally met my medical oncologist and radiologist today. I instantly loved both of them. They gave me lots (maybe too much at one time). The oncology nurse and technicians also gave me lots of information and were very caring. I feel more at ease since I met and feel comfortable with all these. I also have the simulation done. The more info I get isn’t helping much though. It’s good to be prepared though.
My radiation therapy should start within the next two weeks. -

My radiologist mentioned something that sounds like what you mentioned today as being a normal side effect but I would talk to your radiologist about it.
-
I got a call today that I have my set up appointment on April 21, not sure when I'll get started. I have to do 16 treatments. I just want to get it started, as the sooner it's started the sooner it'll be done.
Hope you are all doing well.
-
Hi katej128. I have had some internal intermittent pain in the treated breast as well and expect this is a normal SE. I also have had some tenderness to touch and redness. I feel like it's going well. Don't hesitate to ask questions of your providers if you're unclear about anything in this process. Blessings.
-
katej128, I've noticed that my breast feels more sensitive, especially at night. I told the techs and the doctor that it reminds me of the full feeling I got years ago when I nursed my kids and they all said it looks a little swollen to them. I have light skin, and the treatment area now has a faint tan that matches the parts of my arms that get regular sun exposure. It also looks a little bruised over where the tumor was. I've been up past midnight the last two nights, so I don't think the fatigue has kicked in yet! I'm leaving for appointment #8 of 20 in a few minutes and I can't believe how fast this is going.

Trixieblue. Thank you for sharing those details. Sending you my best

hello everyone! I am two weeks into my radiation, with a round of 20 doses. It’s crazy, I count to 18 seconds on each side. It is scary going in right now, but they call me when I am in the car and I go straight back to the radiation room. No waiting room. I am not getting very many side effects, but After last week I have a aching booby and my nipple is going crazy. A little redness. Other than that it has been pretty easy.
I am using coconut oil and Aquaphor, and I am juicing. Celery juice and cucumber juice to try to hydrate from the inside out. Does anyone have any tips of what they’re doing to help? I heard stretching can help does it help? My oncologist didn’t mention this.
Hugs to you all!

I am scheduled for a lumpectomy for May 11 but have a phone consult with my RO tomorrow morning, so I am snooping around here....I appreciate all of the info and guidance and think you are all ROCK STARS! I watched a video someone posted of their treatment, and I felt the anxiety rise up in my throat. I am a chicken when it comes to big, loud machines!
Does the RO decide if you are face up or face down? What is mapping? And is there always a simulation provided before you begin your treatments?
I am praying for all of us BC gals, and hope everyone stay free of the virus and strong, as you all are now.
Thank you
xx

toria1212 - I had my simulation and mapping yesterday. I was there for a total of 2 hours, and it wasn't bad at all. I had a consult with the RO, an exam, then I was on a table where they placed a form under my back to get proper positioning. They took photos, marked my body, and then I opted to receive the four permanent 'tattoos'. They are the size of a small freckle, and it wasn't too painful at all. They gave me a smock that I will wear for treatments, and I also opted to join the clinical trial for the Mepitel film. (To qualify for the trial , you must be receiving the 30 treatment plan and have large (D or better) breasts)
It will be placed on half of the radiation site to see if/how it protects my skin. I did a lot of reading on here and I ordered the Calendula cream for myself too. I also read to drink lots and lots of water.I was a bit emotional, as I really don't want to be doing any of this - but chose to again be grateful for my 'lessor sentence'. Now the RO will plug in all the numbers, etc and I will be called back (probably Monday) for a dry run - where they make sure all the measurements, mapping and machine match up. If all is well - radiation should start on Tuesday of next week.
I took a pack of post-it notes and made myself a little 'countdown' booklet - 30-1. At the facility I will be going to, you ring a bell when you finish radiation as well, and my husband and I have a plan to drink a bottle of good champagne
-
LB13,
Proud of YOU, sweetie. I am right behind you...thank you for sharing the info about your appointment. I spoke with the radiology PA first and she was wonderful. Then the RO called(both phone consults) and she reiterated what PA shared. She said 4 weeks, 5 days a week for me, last week for boosts. She said they provide the creams and stay on top of any discomfort, or offense to the breast skin. I am a C cup, and I asked about the Metipel, but she really did not answer me...
The waiting is difficult-I am praying the virus has settled down. The hospital I will be at for surgery and treatment is about 30 miles west of Detroit, a "hot" spot. I must have faith that I will be safe.
What champagne are you thinking? I really like champagne and am slowly escalating in pricepoint when we embibe lol
(((hugs))) to you, and prayers for pain free and effective treatments next week and onward
-
toria1212 - Well, when we got married 2 1/2 years ago, a long-time family friend gave us a special bottle of Dom Perignon ($$$$) - we decided no better time than when i finish radiation to pop that very special cork!!
I am also praying for you and your safety. I know you will feel so much better when you get to the other side of surgery. Hopefully we will be coming out of all this COVID craziness and you won't feel as anxious. It was unnerving at my RO appt, but since I work in the healthcare system, I felt okay and that they were keeping me as safe as possible.
There is a thread on here somewhere called 'Crazytown', which I think I am going to have to join also, because at 3am my mind goes wild. By morning, I have myself diagnosed with all sorts of new problems.......
Hang in there and stay positive!

-
Glad to hear that everyone is managing through Covid-19. For all those who have treatments pending...best wishes. You will get through this. For those of you in the mix of treatment...we've got this!!!
Today was treatment #13 of 21. Doing pretty well still. I have been using cortisone for itching and Aquafor and Calendula cream. Tuesday RO ordered a steroid cream for me for itching. I stopped the cortisone and replaced it with this cream. I have pink to red skin with minor discomfort at times. They're pleased with how I'm doing...so am I.
-
striveforhealth I'm glad you are making good progress. My radiation is being delayed, but I’m still checking in to see how the group is doing. I’m thinking of everyone as you power through the side effects. I’m cheering you on
-
Striveforhealth, I had #13 of 20 today too. My skin has some blotchy patches that come and go that kind of look like prickly heat, but I use Aquaphor four times a day and Dove body wash in the shower.
Edited to add that I feel like I don't have much of an appetite or maybe it's just that I'm tired of eating my own cooking three times a day for almost seven weeks straight. The last time I ate in a restaurant was March 7th.
-
I finished 14 of 25 yesterday. Originally I thought I would have to do 30 but my doctor told me this week that I’m only doing 25! I was so happy to hear I’d be done a week earlier.
My skin is doing alright - a little pink in spots and my scar is getting darker. Fatigue comes and goes but when it comes it really comes! Hope you all are doing well. -
LB13 - Dom sounds yummy! Years ago, four of us were on Mount Washington in Pittsburgh and the 'wealthiest' of us treated to TWO bottles of Dom. We had a fabulous night-what a memory

striveforhealth -so glad it's all going well for you!
TrixieBlue -so happy to hear you are more than half way through your treatment. I am so tired of cooking too. Four kids (two are adult sons) in the house, and it seems my days are spent in the kitchen.
elc75 - I am happy to hear that your treatments have been reduced. I will have 20, five days a week, for four weeks, last week boost week. Hope all continues to go well for you.
Everyone-my children and I pray daily together. You are all in our prayers for recovery and complete healing. You are all in my heart already. God bless your day

xx

This my last FULL week of radiation. After my treatment today I experienced some significant pain that didn't last too long, but it was very real. I also noticed that my nipple and areola have gotten so much darker. Does this "tan" go away later?
My boosts are coming so I'm told they will do new measurements tomorrow to narrow the field. It's getting to the end. Bring it on!
TrixieBlue, I have not lost my appetite...in fact, I'm sure I've gained some weight from eating too much. You could say that I'm eating my way through radiation and the pandemic. I'm such a bad girl!!! lol
Blessings to everyone. Keeping you all in my thoughts through your journey.

Hello ladies - tomorrow is the day - first full radiation treatment of 30. Today I had my dry run, and all went well - although @elc75 I now completely understand the 'feeling like a piece of meat' comment as you are on the table all exposed and such. The kicker is that I work for my healthcare system - and eventually I will be in meetings and dinners with some of the docs that treated me. uuuugggghhh. Grateful though, because they are very caring and nice. I am apprehensive and anxious - although I know this must be done - anything to keep this nastiness from ever returning!!
-
I had my first 2 treatments today. I’m only doing partial breast radiation. I am so tired but can’t sleep. I thinks it’s stress. I also have a very bad back and laying flat without moving for so long is killing it. Woke up after about 3 hours sleep. Maybe I can get a couple more before I have to get up. I am inawe of everyone going through this for weeks. Keep it up! Hugs to you all.
-
Yay! I finished all my regular treatments today and start boosts tomorrow! In the last two days, my underarm has gotten very red and my lymph node scar is getting a lot darker. The RO is holding off on calling in a prescription for silvadene (?) for now, but she told me to call if it starts hurting or itching and to add aloe vera gel and cool washcloths to my routine. She also told me to stop using deodorant on that side for now. (I know some people are told not to use it at all during radiation, but she said it is usually okay to use.) Overall, she said my skin has tolerated the experience very well.
