Very Scared and Confused about Possible Mets w/ Mom

Hi there,

My mom is three years into her BC diagnosis (Age: 64, Stage 2b, ER+/PR+, Oncotype Low Risk).


She recently had her six month checkup. Labs looked great. But her X-ray showed fracture in her T9 Vertebrae. At her Oncologist appointment, he wasn’t at all concerned. She had a tennis injury a few months ago and has elevated osteoporosis due to her Arimidex. But he scheduled a MRI w/ and w/o contrast. That was done last Tuesday. We hadn’t heard anything from his office last week.

My mom called his office today about results and was told by the new nurse there was concerning info found on the MRI and that he was referring her to a neurosurgeon. She called records to get her MRI results. It said:

‘Compression deformity with edema at T9. Mild extraosseous signal abnormality raising the possibility of neoplastic involvement.‘

Really bothered that she had to call for her results. I get that COVID is slowing things down. Her main nurse called this afternoon and said the abnormality could be either due to the fracture and be benign or Mets.

But no explanation what the neurosurgeons role in this?

I lost my father to ALS in 2010 and now terrified I’m going to lose my Mom.

We are stuck in a hellish limbo.

    A neurosurgeon consult is pretty standard for any skeletal back problem. That's who I saw for a badly ruptured disc years ago. Please don't assume the worst; you're moms at an age where back problems are common.

    Thank you. My mom is already predisposed to osteoporosis. Her mother had it. And she meets other criteria too. The ironic part is that before her cancer, my Mom’s main health concern was getting knee replacements as her knees are about shot. The Arimidex is speeding things along too.

    I’ll pass this along to my Mom. I wish I could go to the appointment with her but with COVID, I can’t go.

    As you know, the waiting game is awful.

    Totally agree with Alice- our backs were originally meant to hold out until our 40's - we have well and truly exceeded that!

    I suspect the Armidex has played a part here together with genetics as you mentioned. Truly hope you get peace of mind soon!

    Hoping she can get in to see the specialist soon and that it's benign. Stressful, for sure. Horrible that the office did not call with results. I would definitely express my displeasure with that to them.
