My 72 year old mother was just diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer that is ER/HR positive and HER-2 negative. The cancer has spread to her lungs, liver, kidneys and 5 different bones including a large tumor in her skull.

The cancer was found after a break in her femur that has cancer in it. She had surgery to fix the break and is now in rehab trying to get some strength back. So far it has not gone well as she has barely been out of bed 2 weeks after the surgery. The oncologist she has been dealing with says he's not sure her bone will even heal with cancer in it.

We are super confused and not sure how to approach treatment if she is able to get through the rehab. Any advice or questions I should be asking the oncologist is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You might post this in the Stage 4 forums, where those who are also stage 4 can give you good advice.

As for me, I am so sorry to hear your news and I hope you are taking care of yourself as you help your mother.

I'm sorry to hear this too. It is scary for sure.

The treatment center should have resources - social workers, nurse navigators, etc - to support you and your family. Go talk to them, even if you're not sure how they can help you.

the very beginning is difficult because it's the discovery phase of things. Once they nail a treatment down for her, she will slowly gain her strength. Her age plays a part of the slower healing issue for sure. She will most likely face chemo, or even an oral pill called Ibrance Because of her age, they won't want to be too aggressive to her. She may need radiation, should they decide some would benefit from it. Especially in the brain. Just try to breathe and remember. She's not going anywhere today. She just needs to re gain some strength, to start the real battle. Oral chemo is less aggressive, they very well could put her on it immediately. The doctors will do what they think is best. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I am stage four as well. I am now in remission for over 3 years. It can happen, I did have a tumor on my liver. And now some in my bones. They will address one thing at a time I am sending you hugs. I agree with the previous poster. Go to the stage four boards. They are full of knowledgeable and experienced women. Who've been at battle for years with this beast. Myself included,Four years battling stage four. Hang strong. You're a lovely young daughter. I wish you and your mother the very best.
