Does tamox cause fibroid's to "flair up" and has anyone else experienced this?

I just turned 50 with a hx of fibroids and have been on tamox 1.5yrs. I have experienced subtle bowel problems, mostly constipation for last couple of mths. No changes to diet, exercise or fluid intake and I had a colonoscopy 4 yrs ago, which was fine.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Julie,

I have read that Tamoxifen can make fibroids grow.  I also have fibroid tumors, and am very nervous about taking Tamoxifen.  I will have yearly pelvic ultrasounds to check my fibroids and also to check the uterine lining.  I believe Tamoxifen can cause uterine and endometrial cancer.  Even though I have been told that the chance of cancer is VERY LOW, I am TERRIFIED of these, too!

Good Luck!  Let me know how things are going.

    Hugs,

    Harley

    Thanks Harley-

I will be seeing the gyn soon to check this out. If it is the tamox, I am disappointed, as I was getting along fairly well with it, except the hot flashes.

I already had Uterine Artery Embolization to shrink the fibroids (in 06). I thought it had worked but apparently not.Frown

    Hi Julie,

I gotta tell you, that I am so afraid about the risk of uterine cancer and endometrial cancer, that I think I will ask my dr. if I can have a hysterectomy, if that will take care of any risks of developing one of those cancers, and it will take care of the fibroids, too.  I'll let you know what my dr. says when I ask him.  I will see my surgeon at the end of the year, but I don't see my onc until February.

Keep me updated on how you are doing.  Feel free to pm me, if you wish.

    Hugs

Because my BC was EP+ they recommend I have my IUD removed. Except they couldn't FIND it. In July 2019, via an ultrasound, they found it hiding behind a 7cm fibroid. Fast forward past double mastectomy surgery in August, and starting Tamoxafin in November. I started getting lower backaches and gradually more sensitivity to pressure on my lower belly. About mid-February I had a constant feeling like I just overate a large dinner. Finally went to Dr and she thought the fibroid may have grown. Ultrasound showed it was now 12cm! Having hysterectomy in April (maybe sooner, as it is getting exponentially more uncomfortable by the day!) Did not connect the sudden growth to Tamoxafin use until Dr at second ultrasound said that may have been the cause. Now I cringe every day as I take my Tamoxafin. Surgery should, hopefully, be the end of it because it's too soon to stop taking Tamoxafin. I've only been taking it for 4 months!

DBridingmama - I am glad they figured out what was causing the lower backaches and pressure on your belly. You must be relieved to be getting the fibroid out. Do keep taking the Tamoxafin. It does have side effects, but after removing your fibroid you will feel better.
