Wire Localization a Week before surgery

Sorry if is not in the correct topic. From what I have read the wire localization is done on the day of the lumpectomy. For some reason they are doing it a week before. I’m just wondering if it’s going to be an uncomfortable week for me?

A week? That seems really early to me, but my experience is same day and limited to myself only, and mine was 7:30 am mammo, 8:00 am wire localization, 9:30 on way to preop, and released by 2 pm. This group is great so I am hopeful you will get other responses. My personal recommendation is get it done same day! Now about that wire, make sure it is really dressed and packed well. You don't want to dislodge the wire and it is easy to dislodge (they added extra packing to me while I was in the radio room and I was only going to have it for a couple of hours!) The more that I think about this, the more I recommend you ask why they are doing this so early. I had the local anesthetic to the location, but there definitely a bit of discomfort an hour later when the topical wore off (and before preop sedative) and one week later, I still have discomfort in that area (I also had similar discomfort post-biopsy). Having a wire in for a week has impacts for getting the area wet (a week of sponge baths?). The dressing can fall off, wire can be dislodged. Please go ask further about this. Best wishes to you.

Mine was about an hour before surgery. Are you getting a wire or a SAVI device put in? If I didn't have a nickel allergy, my surgeon would have had that device implanted days before, not an hour before.

The surgeon and hospital told me it will be a wire and they use a mammogram. They basically told me that my arm would be sore and I won’t be able to lift it or lift anything heavy. Plus that I will have some discomfort. I ask why so early since almost everywhere I read the earliest is a day before the surgery but they told me is usual for them (I’m going to the cancer center at the biggest hospital in my area).

My surgery is in the 12th and the wire will be put in on the 4th.

I think they have to be using a SAVI scout insertion when they do the localization. They are not going to leave you with a wire sticking out of your breast for a week.-infection risk, plus it would likely get displaced or even accidentally pulled out.

My surgeon does it after the patient has been anesthetized for surgery. She explained that she doesn't want her patients to go through any additional discomfort. So on surgery day, I had to get the tracer dye inserted, then about an hour later I went to the OR, and I was out for all of it!

I will let everyone know on Wednesday once I go. Hopefully is not the wire like they said.

has to be a scavi scout, which is an easy procedure and you don't even feel it afterwards.

a wire makes no sense a week before.
