Paying for a biopsy
So there are a few spots they're looking at. I have a lump that has been there a few years.( I was told it was just fibrous tissue back then ) I have a cluster of microcalcifications and whatever else they were looking at. They gave me a score of 4- should be evaluated. Ie biopsy. So of course I looked up the amount of a biopsy and I'm self pay. 1,700+. I just cover my bills every month. I have a care credit that is way over how much should be on it with my 3 dogs. ( Mostly what I use it for) I also have implants. 20 year old saline. My breasts look great. But, when I told the Dr. that I have to decline due to income she was just like- ok. She did ask me to at least talk to the surgeon. ( Yeah right- what would that cost me $300??) Just to talk? I feel there's no way they can do a biopsy or 5 without deflating my breast. Then I'd have to have that taken out/fixed. Not the kind of $$ I have right now. I feel it's super unfair that they put you in a position where you're freaked out and concerned b/c you don't want to die, but you could also be paying and the percentage of benigns is quite high. Then there's the false positive/negative. I cry almost every day now. They make so much money off of this. AND, what if. What if I have cancer? How will I pay for that? How will I work and pay my bills??? If it was cancer I'd have no problem lopping off both tits. But for me to take a chance when I don't have the money to fix a deflated tit if they cause that it's a hard choice to make. I went in b/c I haven't been feeling 100% so there's no go work another job 24-7 to pay for it all. Anyone in a similar position?

Dear Mareny109,
Welcome to the BCO community. We are sorry for what brings you here. It sounds like you are dealing with a lot on your plate right now. Here is some information on our main site about Paying for Care. We hope something cited there may be of help. Also check out some of the topics in the forum on Financial Issues. I am sorry this is happening to you. Did you have a mammogram then an ultrasound? The good thing about going to the BS is that she can order a MRI. I know it is expensive, but if it is cancer you need to have a plan and she can help you. There was another who posted that she had implants and they were able to do the lumpectomy and her implants were fine. The BS might have options for you to consider. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 months to get the bill and maybe you could pay so much each month. You don't want to take a chance on your life. Good luck to you.

I had implants and still had lateral node dissection when a recurrence was found. The BS could not predict in advance whether I would have to lose the implant, but luckily she was able to skirt the implant boundary.

I have insurance but with a high deductible. My recent biopsy, after insurance, was over $2,300 for my share. I paid $215 and the hospital said they will work with me on the billing for the rest. I've been told by the breast surgeon I will need another biopsy because they think they may have missed my lymph node, one of the spots they biopsied, and so I will have to pay AGAIN. At some point, the money doesn't matter. I switched insurance for January to have lower deductible and out of pocket maximum. If you do not have insurance, you need to get it. At least long enough to find out if you have cancer, and then if you do, keep it. You didn't say if you can get it, I hope you can! Hugs! Edit; Just to add that I'm single Mom and only provider for myself and son so I understand the position you are in. But at the end of the day, this is your health, your life. You need to find a way to get tested.Worry about how you will pay for it later!

Mareny109 I don't know which state that you live in, but surely they have medicaid or the ACA. I have a friend who had to use medicaid when diagnosed with BC.

Sorry I haven't been back on. I have seen the notifications on my phone. Thank you all for the kind words and advice. I'm trying to work and keep myself together even though I'm not sleeping much and crying at the drop of a hat. It's so ugly what this does to you that it should be criminal. I called my nurse practitioner today and got the referral to the bs. It's $150-300. The receptionist said it would depend on how much information the Dr. gives me!!! I'm so mad. Just give me nothing charge me the friggin 150 and tell me how much the biopsy is so I can see if I can find some incredible way to pay for it all. I need to try calling the resources on the front page like Medicaid, but I have to find the time during working hours. My appt with the bs isn't until Jan 27th. ( not their choice- b/c of my work schedule) I swear if I go through all this and by some miracle it's not cancer I will be so grateful. But I will never go through all this again. It's sick what they're putting me through with the worry and they could really give a crap about if I can afford it or not.

Update. I have the biopsy scheduled for March 26th. Just to talk to the bs was $310. They couldn't give me an amount for the pathology. - So great. That's a mystery as to what that's going to cost. I've been looking all over for how to afford things and basically it's best of luck. Or, maybe you'll qualify for state aid. But that still won't pay my bills if I need treatment. I'm literally paycheck to paycheck as many are. Really broken system here in the US. And also, yes, it is somewhat my fault that I didn't go to school and get one of those $100,000 a year jobs.

if you don't have insurance, NOW is absolutely the time to get it, before you have a positive cancer diagnosis as a "preexisting condition"! Yes healthcare and health insurance in this country is often cruel and pathetically inadequate. I purposefully never married my long term partner, just so i could continue to qualify for my state's excellent free healthcare assistance. And thank God I have it; this diagnosis would've ruined us financially. But a birads 4 result is serious and worth following up on, and that WILL cost money, even if it's benign. A few hundred dollars is just the start of it all; treatment can last years. Bear in mind often times results are unclear and even more $$ testing and scans are required, and costs can quickly spiral out of control. Even if you have to pay hundreds of dollars a month for it, I strong encourage you to sign up for a good quality health insurance NOW. If you qualify for assistance, look into that ASAP- this is no time to procrastinate or make your work schedule the priority- take the time to get your health coverage in order now, before a potential diagnosis hijacks you with a constant stress and a slew of Dr appts and scans and tests.

I do have insurance, but a needle core biopsy was discordant benign and they recommended a full excisional biopsy, the cost to me of which even with insurance was something like $3,000 since I had to pay 10% of an exorbitant amount. The doctors thought it had a low chance of being cancer, but in my not thinking rationally state and the fact that my mother did have breast cancer pretty close to my age I am now, I just went with the excisional biopsy. It was benign thankfully and I'm very happy about that, but these false positives are extremely draining emotionally and physically and are expensive.
Getting benign results will at least put your mind at ease though and in the small chance you have cancer, it's best to find it early.
By "biopsy", do you mean excisional biopsy or needle biopsy? Most biopsies start with the needle kind and that won't affect the size of your breasts. An excisional biopsy might since it's full on surgery. Hard for me to say if it did for me yet since I'm sure it is still swollen from the surgery and I still have steri strips on it. I don't think it's much of a change though upon initially looking at it.

I'm sorry you're going through this. But please don't blame the doctor for not knowing what a procedure in a lab costs. It's not something their office would know, and they're not hiding information from you. Is this a teaching hospital you're using? Most of them have clinics with sliding scale payments based on income, but you have to set it up with the billing office first.
-
Hi Alice. This is not a teaching hospital. the Dr. is a breast surgeon, and I'd think they should have some kind of an idea what to tell me about the pathology cost. They even called the lab and got no clear or even ballpark figure.
Aviva 92- this would be a core biopsy
Heartshapedbox. It all sounds great, but if I could AFFORD the insurance I would have it already. They want to link their insurance with your checking account and deduct $$$ every month. My account is usually at $50 or less every week. If I work 6 jobs 24-7 maybe I could have insurance, but then I'd be dead and no time for tests. Plus, what's the point of paying for insurance when you can't pay the deductible?
I thank anyone and everyone who has imput here. Please don't think I'm yelling at anyone or putting people down. So frustrated at this mess. They want you to go do all this and pink ribbons for bc and rah rah, but then when you have to afford it then what?
