Swapping out implant and nipple reconstruction

Next month, I’m due to have my recalled implant in my augmented breast swapped out for a new one. It’s been exactly 10 yrs since it was placed in my non-cancer breast for symmetry. I’m swapping it out because I don’t like the idea of having a recalled implant and also because after 10 yrs, it’s just time.

My mastectomy “breast” was reconstructed using a SGAP. I’m having a hard lump (almost certainly fat necrosis) removed on that side plus nipple reconstruction which I never did originally. I likely will have fat grafting and perhaps a small implant placed in that one too.


For those who have had their implants swapped out, how did it go? Did you have the dreaded drain(s) again?

    I have had two implant swaps. I had immediate reconstruction to silicone rounds (sub-pec), swapped a year later to the textured gummies (410s), and swapped fo silicone rounds with capsulectomy in November 2019. I too did not want the recalled implants in me any longer. I am scheduled for GST grafting in May.

    Recovery for me after each swap was very smooth. This most recent time the biggest “pain" was the incisions again. Both mine were for reconstruction so my incisions are the ones that span my IMFs.This last time I did feel a bit of tightness again as the implants had fuller upper poles than my 410s did but it was only for about 3-4 weeks. I personally was able to go back to gym (just to walk on treadmill or use a stationary bike) and to work a few days later but listen to your body. Usually my biggest hurdle after these surgeries can be recovering from the general anaesthetic...I have low level fatigue for a while.

    I have not needed drains either swap. I expect it will just depend on what your surgeon sees fit at time of surgery though. Better to have drains if there is any concern about it though.
