Not what I was expecting...

Hi everyone,

I first noticed abnormal discharge from one breast when I was 16, and got it checked out immediately. I got referred to a general surgeon who sent me for an ultrasound, she told me that it may have showed a intraductal papilloma but that it was very small and nothing to worry about.

Fast forward 2 years and just before Christmas and my 18th birthday, I was admitted to the hospital for a partially collapse lung. At my follow-up last month, I mentioned to my new general surgeon that my discharge came back.. He told me that the previous surgeon should have continued with ultrasounds every 6 months- a year since I was so young. He consulted with a colleague who told him that I needed an MRI and that she wanted to see me asap.

That's where I am now. I'm seeing my local breast care clinic next week and should be meeting the surgeon that wanted the MRI. I'm sure everyone else goes through these same thoughts, but I can't help but feel a little mad that the surgeon I saw 2 years ago just forgot, or decided not, to follow up.

I'm in my senior year of high school, and I just don't know what to expect going forward.

    Hi elliel:

    Hopefully the breast clinic will be able to give you a more conclusive diagnosis, and it does turn out to be a benign condition.

    Unrelated but I'm just curious, do you know the cause of the collapsed lung and what were your symptoms?

    Hi WC3,

    I ended up in the emergency room after what I thought was whiplash from heavy breaking in the car and after a CT they found the collapsed lung. I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehler's Danlos which makes me more susceptible to them. I have asthma so I assumed my shortness of breath was just a flare-up.

    elliel, of course you are worried and upset that the previous surgeon didn’t follow up. I know someone who has Elhers-Danlos and that in itself is difficult to dx and treat (at least hers has been). I suspect the first surgeon didn’t f-U because you are so young and we typically don’t see bc in people so young. I’m glad your current surgeon is monitoring closely. Hoping this turns out to be nothing worrisome for you
