Question about Microcalcifications
I had my 6 month follow up today (had two biopsies that were fibroadenomas). After today's diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, the Radiologist said I have a new area of “Microcalcifications" . He said they are probably benign and could do a biopsy if I wanted to know for sure, or wait 6 months for another follow up. ughh, what would you do? I don't have my report yet so I have no details or descriptions. I know he said I previously had single calcifications scattered throughout my right breast, but that this was a new finding in the “superior area" that might be grouped together closely. Thank you

The important term is the adjective used to describe the microcalcifications. Post the complete report when you have it. Include the birads, impression and recommendation.

Thank you! I definitely will asap

Hi Dj Mammo, I was able to obtain my Diagnostic Mammogram and US report. I am a bit confused -when I saw the Radiologist after my testing, he explained the microcalcifications, and how "I could biopsy them to know for sure". Then he explained in further that I could wait-seemed he wasn't overly concerned. I never was directly asked if I wanted the biopsy or not as the report states. I guess I wasn't aware that he was asking me a question-I was listening to his explanations/rationales. I have a follow up appointment with my Dr on Monday. I will see what see says as well. Thank you in advance for your input/insight.
** I see the top of page two was cut off. It states:
cm from the nipple. Several similar appearing calcifications are seen scattered throughout the right breast. Short-term follow up to ensure stability is advised.

Pretty straightforward report. Did you have a specific question?
-
something I should biopsy or wait? Also, feelings on punctate microcalcifications? Any cause of concern?
Thank you!

The report is well worded and their impression matches their description of the finings. I can't disagree with their conclusion. If you want to have it biopsied, discuss it with your doc(s).

ok thank you! wanted to ask information about microcalcifications and wasn’t sure was punctate meant.

Click here for page explaining calcifications. Excerpt below:
Round and punctate calcifications
Round calcifications are 0.5-1 mm in size and frequently form in the acini of the terminal duct lobular unit.
When smaller than 0.5 mm, the term 'punctate' is used.Round and punctate calcifications can be seen in fibrocystic changes or adenosis, skin calcifications, skin talc and rarely in DCIS.
Suspect DCIS when the calcifications are small, i.e. punctate , and show some heterogeneity especially when in cluster, linear or segmental distribution.Round and punctate calcifications are classified as:
- Bi-RADS 2: when scattered round calcifications.
- Bi-RADS 3 or 4: when in isolated cluster or if new or ipsilateral to a cancer.
