Saw Surgeon - need xray guided localization lumpectomy
I had my screening mammogram back in Nov 2019. Received a call back in Dec 2019, had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. The radiologist suggested a Breast MRI. I had the MRI in Jan 2020 and the outcome was that I need a biopsy. My primary care doctor referred me to a breast surgeon. I finally had that appointment yesterday. After he looked at
all the test results and the MRI images, he feels that a lumpectomy is the correct course of action. He said the mass looks quite suspicious, based on where it is and my family history (Mom, maternal great aunt and paternal great aunt) he thinks the lumpectomy is what is needed. He said he would be afraid that any type of needle biopsy would not get a good enough sample. I wasn't expecting to hear this news. He suggested that I look at it two different ways: if it is cancer, the lumpectomy would already be over but he would need to go back in and sample nodes and if it isn't cancer, I am back to having a clean mammogram. Any thoughts on this? All of this is just dragging on and the waiting is causing a lot of anxiety. The surgery is scheduled for March 2. Thank you.

I agree a lumpectomy is the likely outcome but typically you'd have a biopsy first to get a sense of what you're dealing with. That said, do you trust the breast surgeon? It is an easy procedure with minimal downtime.

Thank you. Yes I did like the doctor and he came very highly recommended by several friends who have also been patients.

Yes, I did like the surgeon. He comes highly recommended by my own doctor from personal experience as well as several friends of mine. What should I anticipate with recovery based on going back to work? Thank you.

I took a week off work because I could and because general anesthesia doesn't play nicely with me. I could have gone back sooner, although I was glad not to have to do that.
-
Thank you. I am going to tell my boss a week and that I will come back sooner if possible. Agree on general anesthesia …

When I had my excisional biopsy I was told to take the following day off, but then I could go back to work, subject to lifting restrictions.

It seems very strange to not have a biopsy first. Personally, I'd get a second opinion.
-
Did they say why a needle biopsy wouldn't get a good sample?

Re: work—I think I typically took three days off, not because I actually needed it but as a little treat. If you happen to be scheduled for a Wed or Thu, you should be good to go by Monday.

yes that is what they said

Thank you!

I had a lumpectomy on Monday. Just got a call that the mass was benign. So relieved.
