Found a lump and I'm panicking

So I'm 18 and was doing a BSE when I found a lump I think. It's like a few inches away from my nipple and it feels like a walnut sized lump, however I don't usually do BSE that much maybe like twice or three times a year so honestly I don't know if this could be normal for me. But i told my mom and she said shell set up a doctor's appointment. I don't think anyone in my family has/had breast cancer, and I am terrified right now. I don't think it's moveable and it is really hard and has a weird jagged texture. Could this be something like cancer?

At the age of 18, your lump is much more likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are the most common lumps in teens and younger women - I had one at age 16 and another at 20. They are completely harmless.

Definitely get it checked up. You'll probably be sent for an ultrasound, which will hopefully confirm that the appearance is consistent with a fibroadenoma. In someone your age, usually that's all that's necessary, although sometimes if the appearance on the ultrasound isn't perfectly clear, a needle biopsy will be recommended. In this type of situation, the biopsy isn't to find cancer, but to prove that it isn't cancer and is just a fibroadenoma.

    Good luck!
