Hello my friends,

I’m really struggling with gastritis that I developed. Went to the ER on Saturday night the pumped me with drugs and sent me home on Sunday and I slept for like 24 hours.

I am struggling with the nausea and Zofran gave me a migraine I think.

I called the MO and they’re supposed to call me back.

I am living on saltines. But can barely eat.

Need advice!!!

Hi Philly! I'm up! Hopefully I can try to help a bit.

Have you tried ginger lozenges? Ginger helps me with nausea a lot, compazine makes me dizzy/so tired I can hardly keep my head up and zofran is the Latin word for no bowel movement, so I like alternatives if I can. They also make ginger capsules in the supplement aisle. I took these during AC chemo and they worked!

Boost or ensure drinks till your appetite returns to give you some energy along with the saltines.

I also highly recommend a mint medley tea, something with peppermint and spearmint in it. The aroma might help with the nausea and the tea might calm your tummy. If you have chicken noodle soup, just drinking the broth might help too until you feel like eating the rest. I hope you feel better soon and I hope some of this helped!

Philly, do you know what brought on your gastritis? Mine was after third round of chemo. Sipping on milk helped with the pain which lasted for several hours. I alternated different anti-emetics every few hours, so never had the nausea. I hope you feel better soon.

Murfy thank you so much for your response!

I think it was brought on by using naproxen and also possibly being on Ibrance combined to a weakened GI?

I am afraid to eat and very nauseated. Been eating saltines and sipping water. I took an antiemetic and I’ll keep taking them.

Any advice is very welcome! Thank you!

Do you think you could handle a popsicle? Something that is soothing but still has calories? I think over in the general Mel's Living Room thread someone mentioned chemo popsicles whereby its whizzed up tofu and berries and then frozen.

Is it the frustration of wanting to eat and being hungry but the nausea? Or just nausea in general?

    hi mySondra

well I am quite nauseated and really don’t want to eat anything. :( plus stomach pain.

I am on protonix and sucralfate now.

I was taking Zofran but it gives me a migraine I discovered

I took compazine at 11:30pm and am ok if it makes me loopy just as long as it helps with the nausea.

I am Wondering how long it typically takes to feel better?

    Hi Philly,

I am not a physician, but my sister is, and she suggested a couple of things:

    1. Thin/runny vegetable based purees (potatoes would be especially good). Have a couple spoons, wait a bit, if you feel fine have a couple more.

    2. No liquids with meat boiled in them (so no chicken broth) and no liquids with lots of sugar. Those are apparently irritating when your stomach lining is inflamed. Essentially nothing too concentrated. This is different from recommendations for people who lack appetite or have nausea from other causes.

    3. A warm water bottle or something similar on your stomach to ease the spasm component (stomach irritation can result in a spasm, and the spasm might take a little while to "let go").

    4. Milk (sweet milk, not fermented). Perhaps with the saltines. Again, small sips with pauses.

    5. Sit up at least 90 minutes after eating.

She thinks you should start feeling better in a day or so. I hope you do.

    thank you Piggy!

    I love those suggestions!

I was able to eat a bowl of matzoh ball soup today and it felt and tasted great!

I am wondering what is sweet milk? And what is fermented milk?

Thank you so much for asking your sister - that was incredibly kind of you. I feel like I am taking a turn for the better finally!! Whew!!!

    Love

So glad you're feeling better! Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on.

Sorry about the confusion - sweet milk is just regular milk and fermented (or "sour") milk is anything like kefir or buttermilk. Even though I've lived in the US for over twenty years, I'm not a native English speaker - I think there still are certain words/expressions that I translate from my native language, occasionally with confusing results.

lol I thought I’d sounded possibly British? Is that where you are?

The idea of sweet milk sounds yummy! I love ice cream so that definitely is appealing :)
