Small lump
I've been having some nipple tingling and pain and discomfort as well as itching in my left breast so I went to my gynecologist who found a lump in that breast and sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed a lump, about 1cm. he said it is possibly a fibrodema but it's to small and to come back in 6 months for a re-check. I'm a little nervous just because he said it shouldnt bother me at all. My mom passed from colon cancer in 2017 and I've heard but dont know for sure my estranged sister (in prison) had "high pre cancer" in one of her breast that was removed about a year ago. I think I'm over reacting but I can't seem to help it.

Hi Wild_horses and welcome to Breastcancer.org,
We're so sorry you find yourself here and worrying, but we're happy you've found us. You're sure to get great advice and support here!
We understand it can certainly be unsettling to have symptoms, find a lump and then be told to "watch and wait." Others here will have some suggestions soon. In the meantime, did you tell your doctor about your family history? That knowledge may help them decide next best course of action.

Thank you so much! Yes they know. I just hate to wait 6 months. The doctor said they can't do anything until it grows to 2cm. I go back to my gynecologist in a couple of weeks so I guess I will have see what she says.

I'm with the mods here. Definitely tell your gyn about your family history. And, I don't know what your doc means about "we can't do anything until it grows to 2 cm." Huh? Lots of women here have had biopsies and have been diagnosed with cancer despite having a lump smaller than 2 cm.! (My lump was 5 cm.+, but that is relatively large for the BC patients on this board.) Maybe your gyn can get you a referral to a breast center where they can check it out. Good luck!

That is exactly what I thought. He looked over the ultrasound ( he didnt do the actual ultrasound) for literally 2 seconds and said most breast masses are benign and he's pretty sure its just a fibroadenoma which is a benign mass, so nothing to worry about. Then he said to be safe come back in 6 months to see if it has grown. He said they arent bothersome and most women never know they have them but mine is definitely bothersome!

Get a new doctor NOW. Everything your current doctor told you is BS.

How old are you? It is NOT true that they have to wait for it to be 2cm to do anything. It sounds like they are just being dismissive of you. However that is fairly common if you are under 30 or 35. However, they can get a lot of info from the ultrasound imaging. Try to see if you can access your report, it may make you feel better. Your palpable area may have all the characteristics of benign lumps from what they are able to see on the ultrasound, and that's why they think it's worth just monitoring instead of doing a biopsy.

blah333 this is what the test result they sent me says.
Reason for exam:Left breast mass.
Findings:In the 1:00 position is a 8.8 x 11 x 5.4 mm hypoechoic solid mass with lobular margins. No posterior shadowing is present. No abnormal microcalcifications are seen. The remaining breast parenchyma is normal.
IMPRESSION:
Probable fibroadenoma in the 1:00 position. A six-month follow-up breast ultrasound is recommended. BI-RADS 3. Probably benign

Wild horses - I think you're OK waiting to see your GYN in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, you can post your report on the thread "how to interpret your report" and djmammo may be able to answer your questions.

That sounds very small, and as though it has the characteristics of a benign fibroedema as they say. It does seem safe to wait 6 months. Then they can do another ultrasound and see if there are additional fibrocystic changes or if it grows. I would try not to worry too much about this right now, fibroedemas are quite common. Just make sure you do follow up with that 6 month appointment. Just stay on top of your screening appointments and feel yourself once or twice a month for changes and you should be OK. From your report it does not sound like they are being dismissive or negligent with you. It is safe to monitor this for now. Most breast cancers take years to grow. If you are VERY worried, ask them if they'd let you come back in 3 months instead of 6.
