Doctor's office dropped the ball. A bit nervous.

edited January 2020 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Hi everyone,

Mostly here to vent. I've had discharge from my left breast for a couple of years. GYN referred me for a mammogram and ultrasound in October and his office told me everything was normal. I received a call from the mammogram center on Friday advising that they had been waiting on my doc to send orders since the ultrasound for further imaging and they had finally received them. She was unable to provide much info other than my breast tissue is very dense.

I now have an appointment for Tuesday morning. I am a bit on edge because my husband's aunt is currently in the fight of her life due to breast cancer that was misdiagnosed for several months. Praying it's nothing and they are just being thorough.

Sending good thoughts your way that they are just being thorough. Are you getting another ultrasound, or an MRI? And did you request copies of your mammogram and ultrasound reports? Even if it's nothing, with dense breasts it's really good actually that they are getting images they (and you) can track.

If you are in the States you should have received the required ACR lay-letter directly from the breast imaging facility telling you what the study showed and what the follow up imaging recommendations were if any, about a week after your initial study. Did you receive such a letter?

    They look like this: https://www.acr.org/Clinical-Resources/Breast-Imaging-Resources/Lay-Report-Letters

I am in the States and didn't receive a letter until I got one yesterday advising that follow up was recommended. We have issues getting our mail here so probably more of a USPS issue. I will ask them Tuesday.

Thank you! I took the call while in a meeting and didn't ask everything I wanted to ask! I was really surprised by it and of course thought of questions as soon as we hung up. I'm assuming it's just another ultrasound. I thought my first appt was just a mammogram and didn't know an ultrasound was scheduled then either. I'm going to ask for copies of everything Tuesday.

I hope it all turns out to be NBD. If you have dense breasts you really need an US vrs. a mammogram so they can see everything more clearly but def. doesn't mean the worst. Sorry this happened, waiting sucks!

Thank you! I did have an ultrasound in October and whatever results they have from that are why they have me coming back in. Thankful they are thorough and very annoyed with my dr. for reporting everything was normal. I'm glad they were able to get me in so quickly. Waiting definitely sucks <3

What date is on the letter and what date is on the post mark? Is if from your doc or the imaging center?

Often times the exams are completely normal but a follow up may be recommended by the radiologist "if symptoms persist". In this scenario the exam would be normal and that's what you were told, but the mammo facility in a yearly MQSA review may have seen you never came back for a follow up recommended by the rad and not by your doctor.

Hopefully it's something along those lines other than waiting on my doctor's office to send over orders after they sent the report in October. The letter is dated 01/09 and postmarked 01/10. It was sent from the imaging center.

Is there a line in any of the October reports, that recommends a 3 month follow up?

I've unfortunately not seen any of the reports. I will be asking for copies while I am there tomorrow morning. The letter says "The results of your left breast MG US completed October 23, 2019 indicated that an ultrasound was recommended. As of this date, we have no record that this was performed."

There it is. These reviews try to catch those who might have otherwise completely slipped through the cracks.

It's been a fun morning. Got to the imaging center and was told it may have been entered into the computer incorrectly and I didn't need to be seen. She told me I would have to get my records from the hospital. My referring doctor is across the street so I walked there to see if they could just give me copies instead. She was surprised it was not done and sent me right back to the imaging center. He ordered a 4 quadrant sonogram and wanted it done in 3 months. So now I'm hanging out in the waiting room because they canceled my first appointment and having to work me back in.

I'm glad I'm not alone in things not going smoothly 😂 I did eventually - 3.5 hours later. The ultrasound in October was just my left breast but they did a bilateral today. Glad it's done and hoping to hear back from them sooner rather than later. Thank you all for letting me vent!

I would discuss this situation with the doc that told you everything was fine despite the rad's recommendation of a 3 month follow up. Regardless of the inconvenience, thanks to the diligence of the imaging center your three month follow up was in fact performed on time.
