3 Biopsies Ordered ?

Hello all! Waiting to get 3 biopsies (scheduled for a week from today). Went to get mammogram yesterday - my obgyn dismissed a small lump in my breast as nothing to worry about (said he could order a mammogram if it made me feel better. I was so sure it was fine I almost didn’t say anything to the nurse. When I did, they ended up doing a regular mammogram and had a radiologist view it to see if further diagnostics were needed. They ordered an additional magnification of both breasts due to some calcifications. An ultrasound was done on the lump. When it was all over they ordered 1 ultrasound guided core biopsy on a palpable lump (the reason I went for mammogram) and a stereotactic core biopsy (x2) of the areas of calcifications on each breast. Two radiologists preformed the ultrasound on the lump and said there were come calcifications around it as well that caused concern. I guess my question is - is it normal to have that many areas in need of biopsies?? My mom had breast cancer at 45 and I am about to turn 39, so I know I’m in a higher risk bracket. Any insight would be great! I am trying to be positive, but going from “oh this is nothing, to 3 freaking biopsies” was unsettling to say the least.     Hi. So sorry you had to come here. Just wanted to reassure you a little bit that ordering 3 biopsies is not that unusual. Especially because you are young and there probably isn't much history (prior reports to compare to?) I am wishing you the best! Please come back and let us know how your are!

    In my experience, I was late getting my very 1st mammogram ever as I didn't even have a primary care physician. I was never a Dr. person. Only when something was wrong. Between the time of finding a primary who ordered lots of tests (mammo 1 of them), I found the lump and got the diagnostic mammo and ultra sound done. My first biopsy was of the lump and 2 other spots on the left side (2) were cysts and one of them ruptured when the needle hit it. I watched it on ultra sound! LOL. Next, had an MRI revealing weird stuff on the right side so I went in for another biopsy. That day, they blindsided me with seeing (radiologist reading my reports) yet another area of concern, called my BS and I had another biopsy on the right later that day. So, yeah 3. Had more tissue removed on right side at surgery for the left side tumor as well. That's #4. Left side doing some stupid post surgical changes, there's some fluid in there, last MRI radiologist put me at a birads 4 so going in next week for biopsy #5.

    Not fun, but it is really the only way to know 100% what is going on. Again, wish you well. Hope your Mom is doing OK too.

    Was this your first mammogram? It is not uncommon to have multiple biopsies, especially if there are no old films to compare to for stability.

    Remember, they are ruling out cancer, not ruling it in. The vast majority of breast biopsies are benign.

    Thank you all! This is pretty much my first mammogram. I had one back in 2011, but it was because a dr thought they felt a lump, but it was just my sternum (insert palm to forehead!!) and the rest was normal. I’ll definitely give an update after the procedure - I am equally dreading it but can’t wait for the day to get here so I can just get it over with! My mom’s cancer was caught early and she never had any issues afterwards - this year will be 25 years cancer free for her :) I appreciate all the words of encouragement, thank you so much!
