Surgery or Chemo first?
My oncologist appt. was moved to this Friday from February. I am scared lol. Shit is getting real for sure
I was explained that sometimes they like to do chemo first so they can see if the treatment works before removing the cancer. But I also see the point in removing the cancer first.
If given the choice, which one would you do first, chemo or surgery?

It's not so much a choice, but driven by very specific factors about your type and size of tumor. You should get that explanation at your MO appointment.
-
I didn’t have a choice. Chemo first. Then surgery, then rads, then AI.
-
Spookiesmom, what's Al?
-
AliceBastable, I just assumed in some case it is since someone told me they told their MO what's they preferred.
-
anti hormonal, like aramidex is or anastrozal
-
Spookiesmom, got it. Thanks.

ScatteredEnergy, a patient can refuse a particular treatment, or insist on one that isn't recommended. It doesn't make it right or necessary. I had a friend with a miniscule tumor that was removed with the needle biopsy. She INSISTED on chemo although the size, stage, and type all showed it was not necessary. I think it was irresponsible of her doctor to agree, but that's the down side of telling patients that they have a say in their treatment - it doesn't take stupidity into account.
-
AliceBastable, most probably she was scared of showing up later. As long as she knew the risks and agreed, that's fine by me.
-
Scattered - I do wish you would pick a thread and keep posting on just that one. I know I've read lots about your path on this journey, but can't remember any of it.
If you are HER2+, they would most likely do chemo first. Otherwise it depends on a lot of factors. If you do surgery first, you don't have a chance to see how the chemo is worked. But likewise, you might not need such extensive treatment if you do surgery first. Or you might need more. You need to pick an MO that you can trust. If this one doesn't match, get another opinion.

ScatteredEnergy, unfortunately, my friend wanted the Deluxe Cancer Experience. She wore every pink crap accessory available, always brought up that she had CANCER at every opportunity, and loved playing Brave Woman. She was like that with other health issues, too, but they don't sell colorful sequined baseball caps for arthritis or hay fever.
-
MinusTwo, you are the only one that tells me that and as I mentioned before, most forums have different sections and you would open a thread in the section that matches your question. If I post this question in a thread that someone already replied to before, they might be inclined to not open it and read. Please let me know if this community works how you are implying it does so I can leave lol. I rather find another one that works how I am accustomed to.
AliceBastable, well, that's another story lol

I didn't have a choice. I had an excisional biopsy (aka lumpetomy) and that dx'd the cancer. The borders were close but clear, but there wasn't any more surgery needed since the tumor was removed, so I moved to chemo and then rads after that.

Alice,
Wow, I never heard of anyone wanting (and getting!) chemo simply to get attention. Wow again.

claireinaz, I know for sure lumpectomy is not an option for me. I'm driving to see the breast surgeon now. I want a bilateral but in my first appt. w/ her she mentioned that it might not be an option.
-
Clairinaz, have you ever heard the old expression (I think it's southern) that somebody "enjoys ill health?" It's not hypochondria, since there's actually an ailment, but some people like to milk the situation. One of our co-workers was diagnosed with MS and was having problems walking. Drama Queen tried to make it about her and her arthritic knee being THE WORST that could happen. 🙄

I had surgery first because there was no indication that chemo was going to be necessary until the results of my lymph nodes came back after surgery. One was positive which changed everything.
-
I had surgery 1st, then chemo. I was not told or encouraged to do chemo first. Might have changed how things turned out for me from dx to surgery... tumor doubled in size and started into my lymph nodes, thankfully a very small amount on 1 though lymph nodes were clear on initial MRI about a 1.5 months prior to surgery....

Thank you all for your replies. I saw breast surgeon today. She still thinks chemo will he 1st. I have my 1st appt. with the oncologist on Friday and my port appt. for the 30th.
I did see a dentist today because I have been avoiding them for years and he told me there are things I need to take care of before chemo. I don't know how that will affect my treatment until I see the oncologist. I have an appt. to do dental work on Monday and if I'm able to handle it, will do more work a week later which is three days before my port surgery. I'm scared lol
-
@scatteredenergy I'm sorry you're scared but it seems like ebeything is happening one thing right after another so you wont have time to be scared soon, you'll just do it. I think the "down" time is the killer. Much love xxx
@alicebastable "don't sell sequin caps for hayfever" - my new favorite saying !!!
