Side effects from Prolia

I’ve been using Arimidex for three years, and my dexa scan six months ago showed some bone loss. I got an injection of Prolia at that time. I’m due for another one next week, but I have an itchy rash on 90% of my body, knees to neck. The dermatologist said they cannot “rule out” drug related and to hold off on another Prolia injection.

Has anyone else gotten a rash or other nasty side effects from Prolia?

    If your previous Prolia shot was 6 months ago & the rash started recently, I think it's unlikely the residual drug would be causing the rash. I have had 7 shots and other than mild fatigue for day or two, no side effects. Still, I would take the time to delay & figure out the rash. Make sure the derm doc is being proactive in the search - like testing the rash - or you may never get an answer.

    I got my first injection in September, and (thankfully) had no reaction.

    Have you changed anything else in your life recently? Swapped lotions or shampoos or laundry detergents? I know i'm pretty sensitive to all of those and have real issues if I stray from the ones I know don't aggravate my skin.

    My DH has extensiv bone Mets, got his first shot a few weeks ago. No issues.

    Thank you for your replies about Prolia and your experiences. I have had no side effects up until now, I didn't even feel fatigued. I am not using any new soaps, perfumes, or lotions or any new food.

    It has been six months since my prolia injection, but I'm thinking that other side effects I was warned about such as bladder infections or necrosis of the jaw wouldn't occur Immediately. Rash is listed as occurring 11% of the time.

    I'll be very glad to see what my oncologist says on Monday. Maybe she will suggest Tamoxifen.

    Minus two, thank you for the suggestions. I think I'll take the dermatologist's directions to delay the next Prolia injection. It does seem that six months is to long ago to cause this rash. I'm hoping my oncologist will do some blood tests to rule out thyroid, liver or other possible problems that might cause a rash like I have.

    I just wish my doctor could assure me 100% that Prolia is not the cause!

    PDX - it's been my experience - particularly with my dermatologist (who I love by the way) - that there are seldom definitive answer for many skin issues. Lots of trial & error stuff. I wouldn't plan on putting off the Prolia for too long if no one can give you a specific answer.

    I've had 5 prolia injections and do have minor skin issues from the drug. I wasn't sure my issues were from Prolia since they didn't always start right after the injection but after my shot in October, I knew my skin issues were from Prolia as I started itching right away, and had no issues with skin before my shot. I get itchy patches that move around - sometimes elbows and creases in arms and sometimes knees and my back. Lotions for excema seem to help. I wouldn't rule out Prolia as the cause of your skin issues.

    Thank you for that information. I have been doing just what you suggested, by using ointment, actually a prescription cortisone cream to alleviate the rash and itching. I’m happy to say that after two weeks of slathering that stuff on, my rash is gone.

    My oncologist suggested I wait to have my next Prolia injection until the rash was cleared up. She is doubtful that Prolia caused the rash so many months after the injection and said it could be caused by stress.

    I hate to think that I’m having such stress in my life that it could cause a knees to neck rash, but I suppose I have to consider that is a possibility if it’s not Prolia. Then maybe I should consider low dose Prozac?!

    Next week I’m going to have my next Prolia injection and see if I have more skin issues.

    It’s encouraging that you have continued through five Prolia shots and tolerate the skin issues. I hope I will be able to tolerate it for the good of my bones
