Do BMI or Breast Density Impact Cancer Risk for LCIS women?

Hello Fellow Travelers, I was diagnosed about two yrs ago with LCIS and I try to read what I can find on the subject. Found a summary of a study in the Annals of Surgical Oncology (Jan 2020) asking whether breast density or BMI (body mass index) have any impact on breast cancer risk in women with LCIS. I found this interesting because I have read a number of articles lately about elevated BMI being a *general* risk factor for breast cancer.

This study seems to conclude that greater breast density IS indeed a risk factor for future breast cancer in LCIS women, but BMI does NOT impact breast cancer risk. The study also reiterates the findings that anti-hormonal drugs DO cut risk for women with LCIS.

Also of interest to me was the finding that in the LCIS women in this study, the 5 year incidence of breast cancer was 10%, while the 10 year incidence was 17%. This matches other figures that I have seen suggesting a 1-2% risk of bcper year.

Just wanted to throw this out there for consideration, in case it is of interest to anyone else here.

Yes, it was very interesting -- thanks for posting. My LCIS was found during lumpectomy for ILC so I still worry about a recurrence. Who knows how much more LCIS is in my two breasts. When I was young I was always told that I had very dense breast, but now they say they are no longer dense. So I guess the LCIS could have developed years ago when my breast were so dense. I was also glad to read that BMI has nothing to do with the LCIS developing into cancer. Now they just have to figure out what makes it progress to cancer. I've read that 80% of women with LCIS never go on to develop cancer. I think that I drank to much wine every night for way to many years (-:
