Did anyone take Short Term Disability before surgery?

I have a high stress job. I've been waiting for my first appointment with my care team which is on 12/31. I've been hanging on at work for the last 3 weeks since diagnosis. I handle back to back calls all day which require patience, understanding, and empathy. I'm low on all these things right now. There really isn't much room for mistakes in my job. I am recorded and analyzed literally every second on the job. My employer is understanding, but I really can't take breaks when I'm feeling overwhelmed and I can't give less than the best customer treatment than they require. So, if I ask my care team to put me on STD right away, will this be possible. I understand that I would start STD when I have surgery but I don't know if I can make it another few weeks while they do testing and whatever it is they will need to do! Right now all I can focus on is my health and spending time with my son. I just don't want to put my job in jeapordy because of the emotional stress I am under.

    dyson, sorry you find yourself here. I recall using my short term disability intermittently in the beginning. Mainly to cover me for appts before I had surgery then again intermittently during chemo. The only time I was continuously off was to recover from surgery. It helped me to keep working to keep my mind occupied but I was fortunate to be able to take off when I needed to. Wishing you the best. Hang in there

    hello yes I did take 6mon leave of absence then went back to a welcome back party at medical center I worked at. But after a short time back I had to go out on Disabilty cause of breathing problems heart problems from treatments. But Praise God I am now a 25 25yr Survivor and celebrated 25 yr wedding anniversary. Was diagnosed as we were making wedding plans. msphil idc stage2 0/3 nodes 3 months chemo before and after Lmast then got married to wonderful man our 2nd marriages then 7wks rads and 5yrs on Tamoxifen
