Waiting on results from stereotactic biopsy

edited November 2019 in Waiting for Test Results

Hi. I'm new here, so I hope I'm doing this right! I had my annual mammogram and ultrasound a week ago today, and they found a suspicious calcification. I had a stereotactic biopsy on Friday (3 days ago). There is a history of breast cancer in my family; my mom is a survivor, she has a sister who lost her battle, and my half-sister is a survivor (we share the same dad). Everyone keeps telling me that I'll be fine, and that most calcifications are "nothing" and that I shouldn't be worrying, but I am. I'm worried about my own health, but I think I'm even more concerned about the impact this could have on other people. I haven't even told my parents because I don't think that they would manage their worry well, and I figured that there isn't any point in worrying them if there may not even be anything to worry about. I'm dealing with a lot of feelings of anxiety and sadness (I'm sure all connected to the underlying worry). I'm single, I live alone, and don't really have many people to talk to about this. I was told that the results take up to 5 business days, but since I had the biopsy on Friday afternoon, and today is holiday (Veteran's Day) my expectations for hearing anything this week are low. I'm feeling lonely in my circumstances which makes the worry even worse. I'd love to hear from anyone that has experienced anything similar.

The waiting is the hardest part! My situation is not the same, but I do know how you’re feeling to a degree. I have surgery this Friday to remove a probable Fibroadenoma and check to see if it is a phyllodes tumor. I don’t share a lot about my worry because my family isn’t supportive, my husband has PTSD from his time in the Army, and my kids just don’t need the worry. I have friends, but they just brush it off with a “You're fine” and move on with whatever positive thing they can come up with. This forum is amazing for me.

I had my stereotactic biopsy last Thursday and got my results yesterday (Monday). After almost four weeks of worry, the calcifications turned out to be scar tissue from previous lumpectomy and radiation. I understand what you're going through and pray you have good results as most calcifications turn out to be benign. Best of luck! And for anyone reading this who is stressing out over the biopsy procedure itself, it was actually very easy, other than lying on the table for 30 minutes.

teapot75, the waiting is hard, even when they say something is probably benign our minds have a tendency to get carried away with "what if" scenarios. I hope you get your results sooner rather than later...and that everything is fine.

I had a suspicious area that turned out to be a radial scar, which is benign but they still wanted to remove it. And now I am in a cycle of 6 month screenings which result in a lot of screening, call back, biopsy, wait cycles it seems. Best of luck to you.

This community is a really supportive one...and these ladies (and gentlemen too) really understand as they have all been on this kind of journey themselves. It does really help to share here!

Thank you so much everyone. Just having a place to talk about this has been so incredibly helpful. I’m a planner, so I’m constantly running different scenarios through my head “if this happens, then I’ll do this...and if they say that, then I’ll do this...” I’d love to just be able to get out of my own way! Talking about it with kind people like yourselves has provided some tremendous relief as I wait. Thank you so much. I’ll be thinking of all of you and we continue to wait and watch together.
