edited November 2019 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Hello all, my name is Leah and I'm 39 turning 40 this coming February. Last Saturday (November 2nd) I found a what feels like pretty round hard like lump about the size of a blueberry in left breast on the inside at about the 11 o'clock position. Depending on the position I am sitting or laying are standing in it's easier to feel some ways than others. I saw my pcp who did feel what I was feeling, she didn't feel that it was anything to be too concerned about , but she decided to send me to the breast center to get a screening 3-D mammogram on my right breast, and a diagnostic 3-D mammogram on my left as well as an ultrasound on my left. With my family history ( my mom had post menopausal BC at the age of 64) and me being so close to 40 that she felt I should get in now. Got my tests done, says they found nothing concerning, on mammogram and ultrasound noted A ridge of benign breast tissue, that they classified as Benign fibrofatty tissue in the area of my concern where I am feeling the lump. My question is being they say I have very fatty breasts As opposed to dense and they say they see nothing concerning but some normal breast tissue,I am still very scared and concerned because I honestly feel a lump. should I be pushing For further testing, like an MRI or biopsy or what have you. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am still pretty nervous and scared about this whole thing.

They missed my cancer on both the mammogram and ultrasound but I had extremely dense breasts. If you have fatty breasts then the mammogram is less likely to miss IDC but may still miss ILC. Maybe someone more familiar with that can chime in but if an MRI would give you peace of mind then I don't think it unreasonable for you to request one. Personally I think baseline breast MRIs should be standard.

thanks for your input, I've thought about ILC, from what I read ILC typically doesn't cause a mass, but I might ask my PCP to send me to a breast surgeon. For another look

update: I'm in the process of getting in to see a breast surgeon. But I'm just so scared. Anyone out there been in this same situation, with mostly fatty breasts and scan missed a lump/cancer? They did a magnified ultrasound and focused on the spot I was feeling the lump, but saw nothing but a ridge of benign breast tissue. But I still feel a round lump and that's what my dr felt as well. I'm trying to stay positive and take comfort in the fact I don't have dense breast tissue, but still very much worried.

Bailey, I am BRCA1+ and was doing close monitoring of breast health. Mammogram was WNL but MRI found spots in both breasts. They were clearly seen on ultrasound and radiologist referred for biopsy. I, too, had fatty breasts. One spot was fibroadenoma and the other was bc. That said, yours would likely to have shown up on US, but certainly talk w the breast surgeon about the value of MRI.

thank you for your reply, yeah both my mammogram and ultrasound are normal. Radiologist and the tech both told me before I left that if there was anything in there bad, they would see it. But I did get an appointment with a breast surgeon for next Tuesday to discuss my concerns and fears and just get a second opinion.

I’m glad you’re seeing a specialist. My lump was dismissed for 2 years because it wasn’t seen on US or mammogram. When another area was biopsied as BC (originally just thought to be a fibroadenoma), excisional biopsy confirmed it was IDC. An MRI was ordered to rule out anything in the other breast. That MRI showed the lump I had all along turned out to be ILC. So no...US and mammograms don’t always find the bad guys. Be your own strongest advocate, don’t stop until you get answers. A negative biopsy is better than just waiting and seeing - trust me...I no longer wait and see...the only way to know without a doubt if something is benign or malignant is through a biopsy. Push for it.

I’m going to see the surgeon tomorrow, I was supposed to Tuesday but had to reschedule. If you don’t mind me asking, do you have dense breast tissue? They say mine are almost all fatty.

It's possible that you have a lipoma, which is a benign growth made of fat cells. They are surprisingly solid. I had one on the front of my neck that slowly grew to the size of an egg until I finally had it removed.

UPDATE: I went to see the breast surgeon, he did an exam and went over my scans with me, there is nothing in there but normal breast tissue. I knew they said I had mostly fatty breasts, but damn they are basically all fatty, meaning nothing is hiding in them suckers. He said I have nothing to worry about. Thank all for all you advise and kind words -leah
