No gummy bear implants! They have been recalled by the manufacturer Allergan

Mine was put in as part of an implant exchange in 2014. I had mine (single on right side) removed last week at the same time my left MX was done. Smooth silicone now on both sides.

Well, I made it through my lumpectomy yesterday and I'm still feeling pretty good today. I arrived at the surgery center at 6:30am and was able to go home a little after 12noon. I wasn't scared, my hubby and best friend were there. I had never had anesthesia before so I didn't know what to expect. I remember giving my hubby a kiss then nothing after that til I woke up. I was still pretty out of it, but do I remember my surgeon coming in to talk to us afterward. All I remember her saying was that my lymph nodes were clear (Hallelujah!) and that the tumor she removed was larger than originally thought. All of the images prior indicated that I had three small tumors and one larger one all in the same area. Turned out that it was just one large one. I'm going back next week for my post-op and will find out the results from the pathology report. Hopefully I will only need 4 weeks of radiation as long as my oncotype score is low, which I'm really hoping for so I don't need to do chemo. I'm not in any pain right now, just has a slight headache when I got home yesterday. No nausea at all, in fact I was starving and ended up eating a whole foot long sub for lunch and then dinner later. Glad the anesthesia didn't affect my appetite. However, the tip of my tongue is still numb, is this normal and should it go away in a couple of days? I’ll call the office if it doesn’t go away by the end of the weekend. Just going to take it easy for the next two weeks while I’m off work.

Congratulations Teslafied! Glad the lumpectomy went well and that your nodes were clear! I've never had numbness in the tip of my tongue. And definitely take it easy while you can!

Hey Teslafied. Glad you made it through. My surgery is coming up. So nervous. How can they see if lymph nodes are clean... don’t they need to test it before saying anything?

Hi all! So sorry I've been MIA from this thread. So glad your lumpectomy went well, Teslafied, and nodes look good!

I can't remember how much or whether I've even updated here, but I had my bilateral mastectomy Thursday afternoon, and they were able to go direct to implant. Hooray! I stayed one night in the hospital, and my night nurse was 100% Seth Rogan, which made those middle of the night vitals checks a little more funny and adorable. I was home by noon on Friday. I've been taking it really easy and had a horrible migraine by Friday night (either the anesthesia or Norco, I don't know). I switched to Tylenol by Friday night, which has been mostly okay at controlling pain AND the headache has gotten a lot better.

Now I'm dealing with four drains, which is fun! My left side is draining well and feels really good, for the most part, but my right side has a lot of fluid built up and more pain as a result. I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary, I just wish both sides felt as good as my left! Today I'm sending my husband out with the kids, and I'll be binge watching more Mindhunter and snoozing.

Oh, and for anyone getting mastectomy, I bought a cheapo waitress apron on Amazon, and it has SAVED me, especially having so many drains.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. Still feeling good although a little more tired today.  My tongue still feels numb at the tip  I looked a little more closely at it and there is a very small white ulceration underneath.  Nothing too bothersome.

Eigna, my surgeon took two nodes and they were tested right away.  She had told me if the nodes showed any signs, she would take a few more.  But they were clear.  Best of luck to you with your upcoming surgery.

I feel very lucky and a little guilty because so many of you probably feel a lot worse than me after surgery.  I’m staying positive and not worrying right now about the pathology report until my next appt.  One day at a time...Good luck to all of you with your recoveries.

Hi All, New to this thread but see many of you from the other October surgeries one... Can I rant for a second?

At my pre-op with PS, we were told to clear the 4 drains from my BMX, but leave the hospital bra in place until the post-op appt. When we went to that appt 3 days later, the dr was unhappy with us that the drains were all clogged the first inch or so. Guess what - that's because they were under the bra. And the bra was never fully closed at sx and I couldn't get it closed at the appt - clearly a sign the damn bra was not the right size! And since the drains were pinched under that way too tight bra band, they were a mess. I asked if I could switch to a front-close sports bra - actually a mastectomy bra that I'd been fitted with before sx - and he said no.

Well, my poor hubby saw me sobbing my eyes out for several hours because I couldn't sleep, couldn't be comfortable in any position, was exhausted and in pain that no drugs were fixing, so at 2 am this morning, I made the executive decision to switch the damn bra out! Phew. Breathing better, resting better, feeling better. I need to make peace with this PS because I have tissue expanders with eventual implants coming. I'm just so angry with him.

Thanks for letting me get that out. Is anyone sleeping in their own bed yet without a pillow fort? I'm still using the recliner, and when I'm too far reclined, everything hurts and feels weird, so I'm afraid of trying to get in the bed. Is anyone else having that experience?

    NoMoreKinda…,

I am sorry that you are struggling, did you get instruction for proper care of the drains before leaving the hospital? Do you now how to "milk' them? Clogged drains are not the end of the world! Most PS care more about the esthetics and less about patient comfort, I would have the switched the bra in your situation too.

I had BMX on 10/17, sleeping in my bed since the day I came home, just using a pillow for my cancer side to support my arm, however I am not really in pain. Sleep whenever you are comfortable. It will get better, you will get through this, take it one day at the time!

Glad you can rant here! Drains were the worst and I got them out yesterday. I had a sympathetic surgeon but not much could be done for pain before the drains came out. But hang in and they will come out! As just said, take it one day at a time and get comfortable as best you can.

    Dear NoMoreKindaCCups.

My heart really went out to you when I read your post. I had my double mastectomy with tissue expanders placement in July and can totally identify with your experience. The drains were HORRIBLE. There was no comfortable position- even in a recliner. It was a blessing to have them removed. Question for your PS... is not wearing a surgical bra an option? My breast surgeon also did my reconstruction/exchange surgery a couple of weeks ago and instructed me to not wear a surgical bra during the days and weeks post-surgery for both procedures. One thing that totally worked for me was buying two "cushie pillows" on Amazon. They are super-soft round rolls that gently support your arms, providing a nice cushion that really has given me relief so that I can sleep. They come in a lot of different colors and were about $15.00 each- by far the best investment that I made to aid in recovery.

    Hugs-

    Michelle

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful replies. It makes me feel so much less alone!

BgRose, that's great news that you can sleep in the bed. I did notice last night that I was able to put the recliner back further than the previous night without the weird feeling. Maybe I just need to keep working towards full horizontal.

naalehunet - Congrats on getting your drains out! I can only imagine what a relief that must be and I'm looking forward to that feeling. My hubby has been doing a great job taking care of them - I can't really reach them well. I see my BS tomorrow and I'm hoping he takes one or two out. I know the 2 lower ones have to stay in longer since they're still draining more.

Michelle, it's funny you mention that cushie pillow thing - I received one in this wonderful basket of stuff from a hospital volunteer who went through BC too. I just hadn't figured out where to use it because it seemed almost too squishy. I'll try it near the drains on my right side where they just irritate me the most.

Today a friend came to take me to Starbucks, sit in the sunshine, enjoy some iced tea, and catch up with each other. It's the first time since sx that I felt close to normal, if you don't count the drains and the maternity shirt I use to hide them. I hope all of you had a great day too!

    Dear NoMoreKindaCCups.

I just thought that I would check in to see how you slept last night. Did the "cushie pillow" help? I really hope so. I'm still sleeping in my recliner with my pillows. I'm hoping that I'll be able to sleep in my bed in another week or two. I miss having my wonderful husband snoring beside me.

I also had tissue expanders after my double mastectomy- one a scale of one to ten on the fun-o-meter with one being the worst, I'd have to give them a one. The weekly fills weren't too bad... the fact that they felt like they were under my armpit, creeping further towards my back with each fill was miserable. Hence, another reason to buy two "cushie pillows"- one for each arm just to get them lifted enough away from the tissue expanders so that sleep is possible.

Couple of other tips that worked for me... Please be careful with any type of pain medication that you received. Constipation is a really bad side effect. Worse yet, pain meds also aid in promoting depression and moodiness. Be sure to drink lots of water to flush out all of the bad stuff from surgery and get up and move- even if it's just to the mailbox to get your mail.

Best wishes are sent your way re: getting at least two of your drains out. I also had four drains; two were removed at ten days post-surgery and the remaining two were removed two weeks post-surgery. It made a HUGE difference in my quality of life having all of the drains out- bonus: I got to take showers again!!!

    Prayers and Hugs-

    Michelle

Lumpectomy is on Monday followed by Savi Brachytherapy radiation and hopefully no chemo. Won't find out until after surgery. I'm hopeful that I have all my ducks in a row and am ready to move on!

Best of luck and we'll see you on the other side, mallokg!

Michelle, Thanks for checking in on me. I slept in the recliner with the extra pillows between my arms and the chest, and I slept better than I have so far, so that was a great tip! I might have to try sleeping in the bed tonight (if it doesn't feel too weird) since my dog is coming home. My daughter has had him since surgery - it'll be more of the getting back to normal having him home again.

I'm sorry to hear that the tissue expanders were so horrible. Honestly, that's one of my fears about reconstruction, but it's a necessary evil, I guess. How do you feel now with your implants? I'm so happy for you to have the TEs in your past.

My big news of theday is this: my BS pulled the 2 top drains (one was causing so much pain) and of the 4 lymph nodes that were removed, only 1 has a tiny 1.5mm microspot, which he's not sure will cause me to need chemo, and no radiation! I'll meet my oncologist in 3 weeks, after my Oncotype Dx genomic assay is back, to figure out next steps. Life is easier with only 1 drain on each side and lots less pain. I'm hoping to have the other 2 out maybe next week - and then hallelujah, a shower!!

    Hi NoMoreKindaCCups!

Congrats on getting some sleep... more importantly though for shedding some of your drainage baggage !

I would love to speak with you about my experience thus far. It would be much easier than typing a response and waiting to hear back from one another. If you would like to talk to me, please private message me and I will be more than happy to give you my cell phone number. To answer your question though in the interim, the jury is still out on my implants. I've had them for fifteen days and still have a lot of swelling (they feel like the tissue expanders being in my arm pits). They are A LOT softer than the TE's. I'm thinking that they may be too wide for the area that they now call home. I guess that I just need to wait a little longer and give them a chance to settle. I guess that I was so used to having my originals for so long (50 years), it's hard to adjust to the change.

Anyway- I hope that you are having a sunny day and are enjoying having your dog back!

    Hugs!

    Michelle

I am now 10 days out from my BMX with recon; I am having quite a bit of pain in my upper arms. Biceps and triceps. Is this normal? It hurts to straighten my arms. I have been following instructions about lifting and activity.

Hi StAuggie, I'm no expert and did not have PT of any kind offered to me, but I'd say I got back 90% of my range of motion within 10 days or so (probably because I felt I needed to be doing things). I still have some way to go, especially on the side where the SNB was done. I'm copying and pasting this from the other October thread. Maybe some of this will help you...? Gentle stretching to start!

I was given a booklet from oncology nurse that had range of motion exercises to do, I was instructed to start day after surgery. The first three days were shoulder lifts shoulder rolls, squeezing shoulders together, clasping hands in front and raising over head. All 5-10 times. On the 5th day after surgery exercises added where you lay on floor and use broom handle, cane etc to reach over your head first hands shoulder width apart, then hips apart. This followed by clasping hand behind head and trying to touch your arms to floor while laying down. Also spider walking arms up wall as far as you can reach and lastly snow angels on the floor. I am to these every day for at least six weeks. This is probably more information than you wanted. Lol

StAuggie- I had my BMx w/recon on 10/28 and have also had a lot of arm pain. My SO referred me to PT and I had my first appointment today. He said what I’m complaining of is absolutely normal and I need to break up the scar tissue to get full functionality back. He recommended getting a pulley (I can send you the amazon link via PM if interested) and doing a few other stretches. Pinching my shoulder blades together (3 sets of 10). Chest stretches using a doorway (3x30sec). He also wailed on that area using a plastic thingamajig and some sort of gel. I’m sore, but I can actually raise my arm a little higher now without that shooting pain going down my bicep to arm crease
