Abnormal mammogram after IDC. Really scared.

Options

Hi,

So I finished treatment in June 2018 for Stage 2 IDC. Had radiation and chemotherapy, now on ovarian suppression and Letrozole. Everything was going great and I was feeling good. Went back for my bi-yearly mammogram and they found micro calcifications that were clustered in one specific area. It only showed up on the mammogram, the ultrasound was normal. The mammogram that I had six months ago was completely normal. Now they are referring me for a mammogram guided biopsy. What does this mean? Is this DCIS? Can it be IDC without a visible lump? What happens next? Has this happened to anyone else. I am really scared. DCIS or IDC coming so soon after chemo and with an AI has to be really serious right? Any information would be really helpful as I am really freaking out right now.

Hello.....sorry for your news I wish i could help you, but i could hear you out if that helps you. I have also been diagnosed on May 2016 and i just i have stopped the tamoxifen. Have been off for about 7 months now. Well in my last months MRI there was a suspicious finding on my left breast, two non mass findings. Since 2016 I've had T2 multiple foci and cysts. I believe it would just be a cyst, although the small lump seems to hurt when touched. I am up for a biopsy but don't want to go thru the process if the likelihood is just a cyst.. I am confused since the lump hurts and i don't recall on my previous lumpectomy findings to be in pain, this was on my right breast. I would like to know if the MRI's contrast used actually have false readings, which ones have more clear readings. It may sound ridiculous to try to skip the biopsy. My body has had many problems and turmoils i feel like it barely is recuperating and here we go again thru more needles and pain. Have you have a similar problem? If so, Please help..

I'm sorry. I wish that I could help you, but I just don't know. I have not had any pain or any masses. My plan is to have the biopsy. I don't want to have it. I agree we have been through so much, but I just don't know what else to do. If there is something there it is better to know I think.

Definitely have the biopsy. As much as they're a pain to have to go through, it is the only way to definitively know. Keep us posted. Hoping this is benign.

Thanks for the feedback. I am scheduled for a biopsy tomorrow, but will not hear anything till next week. Is this common? Has anyone had a biopsy ordered after a mammogram that turned out to be nothing?

I had calcifications removed after they shown up on a mammogram - (years prior to cancer)- and it was benign.

Vera, yes there have been many women called back after bc for biopsy's. Most turn out to be benign. Sorry it's so much to go through for it to turn out to be OK! Please let us know how you make out.

I'm wondering if the ovarian suppression has something to do with this change in that breast? Just as our breasts go through changes during a woman's cycle.

Vera66– I found 2 small lumps near my scar about 6 months after surgery in 2018. Both were fat necrosis. Had markers placed so they could be identified in future scans. Hope you get benign results

Vera66 - Had surgery and chemo for stage II grade 2 IDC dx in Apr. 2017. On my mammogram 12 months after dx in May 2018, radiologist gave me a BiRad 4 for an area of concern and called for biopsy. Like you I was very concerned because I had just finished aggressive chemo and was on the hormone suppressant pill. My surgeon thought the area was scar tissue and said it was up to me but she would be comfortable if I waited 6 mo. She said 80% of these biopsies come back benign so I waited 6 mo. At the followup mammo in Oct 2018 the same radiologist kept the first "area of concern" and added a second area and again called for a biopsy. Both of these two areas of concerns were clustered calcifications. Surgeon told me that first area was no longer an area of concern despite the radiologist report but she thought I should have a biopsy on the 2nd area. So I did. Came back benign. When May of 2019 rolled around I drove 12 hours round trip to my former radiologist and he reviewed the previous 2 mammograms and wrote in his report that the areas flagged by the new radiologist were "obviously benign". In other words they should not have been flagged and i went through all that worry and biopsy unnecessarily. New mammo was clear. Hope you get a similar good result and most of all I hope you have a competent radiologist. Polly

Thank you to all who responded. As always, the support of you ladies here means so much. Also, to anyone who ends up in the same boat, I was told that it was a BiRad 4B result, which is a pretty high level of concern, and everything came back benign, just scar tissue. Praying for benign results for everyone
