my PS says it is common to have to inject yourself with blood thinners after surgery to prevent clots. It's not a definite as he says I'm low risk. Has anyone else needed to inject themselves after surgery?

They saw what they believed to maybe be some tiny clots in my lungs prior to ovarian cancer surgery. I had to do daily injections for six months

I received Luvenox (sp?) in the hospital and was told I might have to continue the injections at home. In the end, I didn't have to continue at home, but I can no longer remember why not. This was not in prep for surgery, but after the surgery

Yes, I did, after surgery both times. In my stomach like a diabetic would. They leave nasty bruises. Seems like for a week twice a day.

Does it depend which surgery? I had a pretty quick BMX with no recon.

    In my family’s experience....

Of my sister’s 8 or so surgeries (several open for colorectal cancer, hernia, hip and hysterectomy) she only had to do the injections after the open hysterectomy. After BMX, I had to take aspirin but not after any of my other surgeries. My husband had to take aspirin after his hip replacement.

I did not have any blood thinner injections or blood thinning meds prior to or after my double mx. Might be something either that shows an increased risk of or maybe just a dr.'s preferred treatment? just as my PS and BS did not prescribe to pain killers for surgery. All they give is Ketelorac..heavy duty tylenol as the nurse told me. Some PS and BS do presscribe

Never had to do blood thinners until they found clots in my lungs and heart a couple of years ago. Was first on Eliquis twice a day until the APRN at the cancer center took me off of it without consulting my cardiologist or the MO first and put me on Lovenox.Had lots of trouble with those injections twice a day. I had pain in the injection area for anywhere from 10-15 minutes, bloody noses that would start for no reason and nasty bruising. The next time I saw my MO, I told her about it and she put me back on the Eliquis twice a day and I have been fine ever since. Every scan shows no sign of clots.

I was on Warfarin after my hip replacement. Other times I've just had recommendations (but not orders) for baby aspirin. It might depend on the patient's age and general health.

I should also say that my surgeon would not permit aspirin or ibuprofen. I suppose he'd have okayed Tylenol, but I'm not someone who experiences either pain relief or reduced fever from it.

Alice that's a good point about age and state of health. I know I'm not young 54 but I'm in good health so hopefully low risk for clots. I guess I'll do what they to me to do.
