Ultrasound & mammogram tomorrow-results?

I found a lump in my breast & had it checked out by my PCP on Tuesday. She said it is “firm” and 5x7cm. She wants an ultrasound and mammogram done. She also said they would probably do a biopsy at the same time based on my age (51). I have the ultrasound and mammogram scheduled for tomorrow at a breast cancer center in a major hospital. The biopsy is not scheduled, will they most likely make me come back for that or do they ever just add it to the appt

My question is will I get any results tomorrow? My husband really can’t go as he has to take our son to an important appt. I’ve had my sister and a friend offer to come but I don’t want to drag them there if I won’t have any results anyways. My thought is they may give me positive results (I.e. it’s just a cyst) but they won’t give me any immediate negative results until they get the biopsy back. Also, they said the mammogram will take 1.5-2 hours, Any idea why it would take so long?

Laxmom sorry you are going through this but it is good that you are going to a breast center because they are usually ready to take care of everything at once. When I got called back for a mammogram and ultrasound the time they gave me was to do both so that is probably why they gave you that time frame.

Here was my experience...I had my mammogram then the tech took me straight for the ultrasound. After she did her thing she had me wait on the table while she went to see the radiologist. When the radiologist came in she told me it was most likely cancer and we should do a biopsy. From there the tech did an ultrasound of my lymph nodes on that side (those were clear) and then the nurse navigator came in for me to sign some paperwork for the biopsy. I had the biopsy and then received a call with the results a few days later. The nurse navigator did ask me if I wanted to come in for the results or did I just want a phone call, I went with the phone call.

I didn't take my husband with me because last time I had a call back the biopsy was something that was scheduled for later, but I also think that was because I wasn't at the breast center. The tech was sweet though, she went and got my purse out of my locker so I could call my husband and let him know what was going on. He of course offered to come, but I just wanted to get it done.

Best of luck to you. This forum is a great area for support even if you aren't sure where things will land.

my doctor also thought my biopsy would be at the same time as my mammogram and ultrasound. It was not thought. I had initial tests Monday and my biopsy today. I had results from my initial tests before I left on Monday and will have biopsy results in 1-2 business days.

I was told to expect it to take 1-3 hours, depending on what needed to be done. It took just over an hour and a half for me to go through the whole process of changing, waiting, the mammogram, waiting for ultrasound to open up, then waiting for the radiologist to talk with me, changing again, and then seeing a nurse to schedule my biopsy.

Thank you both for your responses. I had my mammogram and ultrasound today. Mammogram took about 45 minutes, it was 3D and they did a lot of images. Then they took me for the ultrasound. Technician said she didn’t see anything but dense tissue and she brought the Dr in. Doctor did the ultrasound for a long time and agreed with the technician. Said it was dense tissue, or possibly a blocked follicle but not likely. Said it should resolve itself in a couple months. He said to just keep an eye on it if the pain increased or if it got larger but he said he did not expect that to happen. I am so relieved right now.

Thanks again! This group is amazing.
