Can one workout or perform exercises for the chest muscles such as push ups after a mastectomy? Is it safe to do so?

    Hi Ire,

You're sure to get some practical answers here from others with experience, but we wanted to share with you this page from the main Breastcancer.org site on Exercise After Surgery, which offers some good advice as well.

    We hope this helps!

    Hi Ire,

I did the PT exercises that included gentle chest and over head stretches starting the day after surgery.

About 1 month later I began yoga, and light weight lifting again, including chest work. My BS ok'd all of this and actually encouraged it. Her only rule was, if it hurts, stop! BTW, I did not have reconstruction, so others would need to speak to excercise if you have that.

Getting back to normal excercise really helped me move forward physically and mentally.

    Debbie

Thank you Debbie. Good for you. Yes I intended mastectomy with reconstruction and wether is it allowed to train chest muscles.

    Regards

    Ire -

I had a BMX with immediate reconstruction and did the starter exercises religiously. Moved on to some very light yoga about a month later. You will eventually get to a place where you can do chest exercises but it will likely take several months. I did find doing all the recommended stretches and the light yoga helped tremendously in my recovery.

I had a BMX and I have TEs right now. I'm clear for any exercise I want.

Ire - every doc is different about when you can start to exercise again. Check with your surgeon.

I agree with Minus Two...you really need to ask your surgeon who know your exact situation and type of implant etc...
