Pretty New - Port Question

Hi everyone,

I am pretty new to this process, having been diagnosed at the end of August. I spent most of September having additional testing (MRI, genetics, lymph node biopsy, etc.). At this point, I have a plan for surgery, chemo, and radiation. My surgery will be a lumpectomy to remove my 4 left breast masses with oncoplastic reduction at the same time and is scheduled for 10/28.

In the meantime my breast surgeon placed a port yesterday. It's still pretty sore and kind of stings a little. I am having trouble getting comfortable trying to sleep. My question for those who have been through this is whether or not that will go away after I heal? Also, I have this vague sense that I am going to somehow dislodge it or something? Did anyone else feel that way?

Thanks for your advice- it helps to know others have been there!

yes, I worried it would dislodge. Every time the did a successful blood draw I breathed a sigh of relief!

After a week I slept comfortably. Mine is still in, and it annoys me if something rubs on it (like a seatbelt or bra strap) but it’s not painful. I get mine out next month and I can’t wait. It was really helpful to have it for chemo and blood draws.

It hurts for a few days and then gets much better. I hardly knew it was there. Good luck!

It will get better. I felt like I had been kicked by a horse, it was so painful for 4 or 5 days. It will get better.

Just wait for a week or two and you should start feeling much better. I used to plan things I would do and places i would visit as soon as i am able to have a full night sleep. You will be there soon. If no improvement occurs even after 15-30 days then do consult your doctor.

I’ve had my port 7 years, no problems.

I’ve had my port for 5 months. Mine is right along the bra strap so my sister has made me pads with Velcro so it doesn’t rub. Mine is still bothersome to me for numerous reason but mainly because I have to carry my handbag on that shoulder.

You get used to it though

My awareness of the port was constant and it bothered me at night. I slept with some small pillows and tried to stay on my back. I had it taken out almost immediately after the chemo. Even the scar bothers me.
