Papilloma vs DCIS
I have a question about papilloma. I am 36 years old with no family history of breast cancer. Today I went for a mammogram r/t clear/yellow staining discharge from one of my breasts for a few weeks. They weren't going to do an ultrasound bc my mammo was negative but I insisted bc I had an order. When they did it the tech came in and out a few times getting more scans, then the radiologist himself came in and scanned me. Finally I asked what in the world they were looking at and he said he believes there is a papilloma. As they were scanning they turned on the vascular part of the machine that lights up blood flow and there was a huge red "lit up" area around the spot they were looking at. I don't know if that should be concerning???? He said it will need to be biopsied and then removed because sometimes what they think is a papilloma is actually cancer but they don't know until it's out. Multiple questions if you could humor me...
1. What color was your discharge if you had any with either papilloma or DCIS?
2. How many of you were told it's probably nothing to find out it was cancerous afterall (I know it will be skewed bc this is a cancer group, just curious if it happens often.)
3. How big of a scar is there from an excision of a papilloma behind the nipple?
4. Is there more blood flow to the 'spot' if it's cancer or a papilloma or are they the same?
Thanks in advance.

Hi mommaof4....I don’t have any answers for you...I to have been having bloody discharge from my left breast...I am scheduled for mammogram and ultrasound next Thursday!
I had a biopsy 2 years ago and gave minimal scaring.
Prayers going up!

Papillomas are extremely vascular and light up brightly on color Doppler. Your history suggests papilloma as well.

I had no discharge with DCIS. I was told at mammogram a small chance of cancer - <20%. Stereotactic biopsy showed ADH. Excisional biopsy - surgeon came out and said she didn't see anything to worry about. 5d later - DCIS. Excisional biopsy scar is about 2-1/2" for about 1 cm mass. It's very thin. I have fair skin and it's barely pinker than my other skin. If yours is behind the nipple maybe they can hide scar in areola border? I didn't have a US, so cant answer the blood flow question. My mammo showed clustered calcifications, so if your mammo was clear, hopefully that's good news.
So... it happens, but it's not the norm. I think they say that when there's a decent chance it's benign because there's no sense in worrying... even though we cant help it. This process is a roller coaster. I hope your ride is short and the outcome is good.
