I feel like I need a drastic change. I am very overweight. And in treatment for DCIS.

I can't decide whether I should go plant based or keto. I know, I know... Totally opposite ways of eating. But I do know that something drastic has to happen in my life for me to start down the road to a healthier lifestyle. I am very black and white.... all or nothing.

There seems to be such pros and cons of each way of eating. I don't know what to do. Any thoughts? What has helped you feel better?

Hi grayskies, I have certainly been where you are. It's very hard. I had a chance to change my diet and it has made a world of difference. I was diagnosed with kidney disease and it scared me to death. So big changes to my eating as it was the only way to keep the numbers from going higher. I lost 47 lbs.

    Here's what I did:

No sugar, gluten, dairy, snacks and soda pop. No packaged lunch meats, processed food and it goes on and on. No red meat because it is very hard on the kidneys.

What I do eat: fish, chick, eggs, potatoes (all kinds), rice, vegetables, fruit. I allow myself one cup of coffee a day with cream and sugar and that's it.

So that's an idea of what changed in my diet. Once you get all the junk out of your system and are eating these simple foods you will be amazed how much better you feel. Feel free to pm me. Good luck.

I think I could do your diet. I love rice and potatoes (I love all things carb...sigh).

Thanks for the suggestions. I will consider your diet seriously.

grayskies... my sister and her husband started the Keto diet several months ago and couldn't be happier with it. My sister says she's never felt so good in her life. I'd suggest looking for reviews online. Wishing you well!

grayskies - what do you love the most? I could give up pretzels and pasta but never meat... if you're all or nothing just look at recipes for each and see which speak to you. Even just cutting out all simple carbs would make a huge difference - no pasta, white rice, bread, cakes, sugar. Instead eat brown rice, farro, beans and root veggies in small portions - would be a huge difference. It tough. I couldn't ever give up dairy... no way.

I was put on a low carb diet 20y ago when I had gestational diabetes and I've really tried to stick to that or circle back to it ever since. I have to say - my college roommate was a vegetarian but but she was probably technically overweight. French fries add up, lol! I'm ducking my head for those that will flip out... but I'm not so sure plant based it's all its cracked up to be.

I think I'm leaning more toward keto or at least a low carb diet.

When I was losing weight intentionally, I did what is called "clean eating". I had very little fat and sugar, ate fruits low on the glycemic index, ate fewer carbs, lots of vegetables, and a fair amount of lean protein. Most importantly, as far as losing weight goes, I restricted my calories to 1200 per day.
