I am having a lumpectomy on Monday. I'm suddenly fearful that the surgeon is accidentally going to do a mastectomy instead. I can't lose my girls. I just can't.

grayskies, sorry you are going through this. Please don't worry. They will ask you before the procedure what you are there for. They will make mark(s) on your body where they will excise. Best wishes!

You have to sign off before the surgery and the surgeon is only allowed to do what you've signed for. And as mentioned above, before the procedure everyone (the head nurse, the doctor, the anaesthesiologist) will talk to you toget confirmation on what is being done.

The days of a woman going into surgery for a lumpectomy and coming out with a mastectomy are decades gone.

I know that my fear is irrational. I guess I'm just scared. Thanks for the responses.

    grayskies:

It would be a pretty big mistake for a surgeon to accidentally do a mastectomy. Every surgical procedure that I have had, the surgeon has come in to the pre op area to confirm what is being done so we both go in to the OR on the same page.
