Lymphedema & Keto diet

Hi,

Last week my PA put me on a keto diet, totally unrelated to my truncal and arm lymphedema. (I had gained an excessive amount of weight due to SE from medication). A BC survivor friend told me she had a noticeable improvement of her lymphedema when she lost weight. Have any of you experienced improvement or total resolution of your lymphedema while on a keto diet?

Many people experience a variety of SEs or vice versa a rainbow of different improvements for many reasons since our bodies are all different. One thing works for another while it may not work at all for another. Unfortunately this seems to be true for Lymphedema.

Perhaps losing weight will help your LE. I hope it does! That would be wonderful and certainly has happened in the case of your friend. However if it doesn't, please do not get discouraged. It hasn't helped me with my LE either.

There are studies showing that the majority of people do not see LE improvement due to weight loss or exercise programs. That being said, weight loss (which is a goal of mine as well) will benefit us in many other ways.

I wish you much luck on the continuing weight loss. :)

Thanks, Spoonie, for the information. LE was my 'one thing' I knew would get to me in this cancer hell...and it certainly has.

fishingal - I have bi-lat lymphedema, worse on the right side that had more nodes removed. I gained weight during chemo and anti-hormonals - eventually ending up about 20 lbs heavier than at diagnosis. I tried a number of ways to lose, South Beach, Mediterranean with walking 5 miles a day, etc. - that had worked in the past, pre-cancer, when I tried to lose a few vanity pounds. I lost nothing. I tried an anti-inflammatory elimination diet after a friend did it for arthritis pain and she lost weight as a side benefit. I had three surgeries during that six month period and still lost 22 lbs. I found that eliminating foods that commonly cause allergies and sensitivities did improve my arm. This is the diet I used:

Not keto, but after a Whole30 and 5 1/2 lbs down, my LE went down a little.

Kathy Bates, the actress, who also had BC and lymphedema, said that her lymphedema improved a lot when she lost weight. Good luck!

I have LE in my breast only. I sleep in my bra. If I go with out the bra it is MUCH worse and hurts. I am starting radiation today. Any thoughts on how to balance needing compression from the bra

and the burn of radiation? Rock and a hard spot! ??

Acucindy : I think you shouldn't have problems with your bra until 10/15 rads ... today I did 11/33 and my skin is doing well. You can use a cotton cloth between your skin and your bra. You can take a look at what Spoonie77 writes here about his boob lasagna:

    Good luck!
