Acrylic Nails

My mother just finished a round of Taxol and will continue to get her Hercepton treatment for a year. Her doctor, while very nice, minimized the effects the chemo would have on her and not sure how we missed it but didn't realize the possibility of her nails coming off. Before treatment she got her nails done (acrylics) for some semblance of self but now her actual nails are starting to come off. Any tips for helping with the nails with the acrylics on at this point

I didn’t have acrylics but when my nails started to lift I cut them down as low as I could, started putting neosporin on and one of them got infected anyway. Recurring...it came back a few times. Went on oral antibiotics the first time, the subsequent times were not as bad and I just used neosporin til it cleared up.

It was only my right hand...I didn’t ice as much on that side. Nails are all normal now, even the one toe nail that fell off!

Acrylics are at risk for fungus even under normal circumstances. You can get colorless iodine at CVS and apply that to try to avoid fungus and infection. One of the nurses at my center also suggested white vinegar soaks to try to avoid infection. White vinegar, tea tree oil and oregano oil are good for a soak.

Good luck, I hope she gets through the weird nail stage comparativelyunscathed.
