Hair Loss

Not sure if this is where I should post this...

I had a BMX at the end of April. Luckily, I did not have to have radiation or chemo. My MO suggested that I could wait until the fall to start on the AI to hopefully make it easier to adjust when the weather isn't so hot. So I am trying to figure out what is making my hair come out by the handful!!!! My hair is noticeably thinner and it is constantly shedding. In the shower and after the shower it is coming out like crazy. The thinning seems to be all over, not patchy. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on what to do? Thanks!

    Hi Hodgepodge,

I recall reading somewhere once that one cause of hair loss can be surgery for which the patient is put under general anesthesia. Apparently the anesthesia is a shock to the system and can cause hair to fall out a few months after the surgery. If that is the case for you, it should be temporary and begin to fill back in. There is a good chance that the emotional and physical stress of the diagnosis and surgery, combined with the stress that the anesthesia putson your body are the culprits, barring any dietary/nutritional deficiencies. I had noticed quite a bit of shedding myself a few months after my surgeries and it has recently improved noticeably. I was under general anesthesia three different times within a few months (I had had a knee surgery shortly before my two breast cancer surgeries), so when I read that explanation, it made sense to me. If I can find the article with that information, I will post it for you. Hopefully that's all it is. Hugs to you!

This is not the original article I read that I mentioned in my post above, but here is a good article from WebMD that lists surgery and anesthesia as possible causes of hair loss, particularly in the form of overall shedding. https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/features/hair-loss-hidden-causes#1
