Axilla / Lymph Nodes during MRI and Ultrasound

I'm curious how people find out that their disease spread to their lymph nodes BEFORE surgery? Is that done via the ultrasound? Breast MRI? both?

If they find something, do they biopsy it? They did not find anything in my lymph nodes during the ultrasound or breast MRI, but I'm wondering... is it because they didn't look??? Do they show up regardless?

I got a second opinion and they said they felt it was a little swollen, but that might have been because of the biopsy, but the imaging is not showing anything.

Thank you!

Do they see your lymph nodes during a mammogram and/or breast MRI? Sorry for the dumb question, but I honestly don't know.

in my case they saw enlarged nodes with US and biopsied the suspicious node which was positive. My MRI wasn't done until after the biopsy results came back.

I had an enlarged node that my surgeon could feel. She also mentioned that it could be swollen as a result of my biopsied. She then ordered an ultrasound which should that it looked normal but it was not confirmed until my sentinel nodes were biopsied at the time of my lumpectomy. They were all negative for cancer. So, I also had an mri but the lymph nodes were checked via ultrasound.

Mine looked normal on ultrasound and MRI....I had 2.1 mm of cancer in one, discovered from sentinel node biopsy.

My lymph nodes were seen on unrelated CT. Then biopsy which diagnosed the cancer. Additional testing was normal. Both mammogram and MRI. Final diagnosis Occult TNBC.

I was really lucky to catch this with the chest CT

my positive lymph node was seen on ultrasound and biopsied. Funny, no doctor ever said they felt it and I never felt it either.
