edited February 2020 in Waiting for Test Results

It has been a LONG month and an even longer week. 7/23 I had my first ever screening mammogram at age 41. Got a phone call a few days later stating an abnormality was seen and so I was scheduled for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound for 8/6. I was not overly concerned as my mom had been called back before due to dense breasts. But as the ultrasound went on I started getting a little more upset and worried and then when the doctor entered to repeat the ultrasound and show me the findings I realized maybe there was something after all. The radiologist recommended a biopsy. I had a consult with the breast specialist 8/14 at which she stated “in my years of experience this looks like cancer." Biopsy was done on 8/20 and at that time she said “maybe it's just dense breast tissue. It is a very subtle and vague finding." Tomorrow at 9am I get the results. I'm at peace. If it's nothing GREAT! (Except being out about $1200 at this point). If it's cancer I feel ok. Tons of internet reading has shown me that stage 0 and stage 1 have a nearly 100% survival rate. My kids will still have me and that was my biggest concern. If it's anything beyond stage 1 I will be in utter shock and probably denial. I can't envision it being beyond that. Architectural distortion was the finding and that seems to be an early indicator. Wish me luck!

    BIRADS 4

I literally keep going back and forth from it being nothing to it being stage 1. I’m not prepared for anything beyond that

Thank you. To everyone on this forum. I’ve learned so much over the past month and my heart goes out to those having to endure this journey.

    My results:

Benign- one more mammogram in a week to make sure the marker clip from the biopsy is in the right place and then everything should be all clear.

The nurse practitioner was surprised as she stated the lesion was “very suspicious.” I’m thankful for my results, for what I’ve learned and for a new perspective. Blessings to everyone.

So I thought my journey here was through for the time being. Benign results. Excellent! Except now the doctor says the marker clip is on the margin of the area of distortion and they really need to have a biopsy from the center of the area of distortion. She wants me to go back for another biopsy, a stereotactic one this time. I’m so torn. I really feel there is nothing to be concerned with and I still owe like $3300 to my deductible so this will basically be out of pocket. I’m already out >$1500 from a screening mammogram that was covered 100%. The chances seem so slim to me, yet even the slightest chance then I know it needs to be done and caught as early as possible. Sigh. I don’t know how you ladies do it

If you're all healed up, I would go back. You would never forgive yourself IF something were to come up again later! Best wishes to you.

Also, the costs of this does suck as well, BUT I refuse to let the almighty dollar dictate my health care.

No one wants the almighty dollar to determine treatment but there are countless women who have gone bankrupt paying for the skyrocketing costs to treat this disease.

I do think I would sell my blood if I had to pay for it or find some agency, etc who could help with the bills. It’s bad enough we have this disease and adding the financial worries that come with it just bring on more stress that we don’t need.

I also think doctors are oblivious to what the costs are. I told my oncologist a few years ago that I needed to change meds because it was just too expensive. I’ll never forget that puzzled look on her face. No money worries for her.

and I am now in the pre-op area awaiting my stereotactic biopsy. Results next Friday. I didn’t go ahead and do it when they originally told me. I did a “wait and see”. In January there were no changes, but for peace of mind I’ve opted to go ahead and pay the exorbitant amount of money to have it done. Fingers crossed that this one will also come back benign.
