Hip pain concerned about bone mets
I've been reading posts for a long time and I'm inspired by the eagerness to help and support each other. Ive been having hip pain for about six months. It was on and off but now it's becoming intolerable. It is worst at night, it starts in my hip but travels to my groin and throbs. It used to be only at night, now it's pretty constant. I have been in physical therapy for 8 weeks, it hasn't made any difference. My oncologist wants an MRI, I'm still paying off medical bills and want to put it off. He ordered blood work and everything looks good. Is it possible to have bone mets and have normal calcium levels and normal AST and ALT? My lower back also hurts but an MRI 2 years ago showed a bulging disc, I'm assuming that's what it is. I hate that every ache and pain brings out the worst thoughts. Thanks for listening

Even my hips get hurt very fast throughout the day.

Hopefully the MRI wll yield answers. I had debilitating hip pain 2 years ago. It turned out to be bursitis. You could see an orthopedic for another opinion if you do not want the MRI right away.
-
Thank you Karen, that’s a good idea. I’ll call and ask for an ortho referral

My DH is going to the orthopedic guy this morning...hip and shin pain. Not every pain is cancer but it is hard to let go of the worry after a diagnosis. I think a follow up is always good if it lasts longer than a month---not only to stop the concern but to feel better!
-
wallycat it’s my oncologist who is alarmed and making me worry. He wanted to order the MRI immediately, I asked to wait for bloodwork and more pt.

Fucancer I am in a similar situation with one sided hip pain, although my pain has not gotten as bad as yours. My oncologist ordered a hip MRI, and I spent some time wondering if I needed to worry about recurrence, but decided it was probably ordered because she thinks the pain may be a side effect of the AI she has me taking. I hit my insurance out of pocket max already for the year so I'm going in for the MRI next week. I bet there are a whole host of things that could be causing it! I'd try not to worry too much about it being a recurrence. Another idea is maybe you should try a different physical therapist? Maybe the individual is trying the wrong things? Do they listen and adjust when you say it's not helping? And you can also see a Physiatrist, which is a rehabilitation medicine doctor, if an orthopedist doesn't work out.

2002chickadee, I am experiencing the same, right hip pain, and I just assumed since I have been on Letrozole for just over a month, that it was from that. I don’t see my MO until the last week in June, but I added it to the list of things to discuss with her. I doubt I will need an MRI because I had a full bone scan in Dec. The pain isn’t severe, more of an ache, but getting steadily worse.
Fucancer100, I hope you can get some relief soon! I hear you about the expense!
I would think you absolutely could have normal ALT/AST and calcium and have bone Mets, but most likely it is something else. Do you take an AI? If you pain continues you should get the MRI. Most places will work with you for payment. If it is something you can do something about, catching it earlier verses later could save you money in the long run!

My DH may have Paget's bone disease....not cancer but not happy either.
I hope yours turns out to be something simple. I think it is great your doc is on top of this and wants to follow through. Best to you.

2002chickadee , Mavericksmom I'm sorry for your pain. I'm on tamoxifen, I couldn't tolerate AIs , the joint pain was crippling for me. I got cortisone shots in both shoulders and my wrist while on exemestane and I was on it for few months.I switched back to tamoxifen about 18 months ago. The physical therapists are excellent, but I'm sure there's a limit to what pt can do.
I did message my pcp this morning and she's referring me to orthopedics. I'm more comfortable doing that than getting another scan. My oncologist is wonderful but a bit too scan happy.
wallycat I'm going to google Pagets bone disease, I do hope it's easily treatable.
Thank you ladies for your input

Fucancer and others, I too have right hip pain. Have a history of bursitis in that hip which had been quiet for 3 years. Flared again this January, the previously successful treatment did not work, arthritis found on X-Ray (felt strange to be happy that that level of pain was "just bursitis and arthritis"). PT has helped and I do exercises at home now. Had my first shingles vaccine injection yesterday and today that hip was really aching. Apparently it is going to be sensitive to changes.
Hope all works for the best for everyone and what is it with right hips anyway???
May you have nothing more than arthritis and/or bursitis!

Updating that my DH's doc called and it is not Paget's. Sigh. Bone mets from prostate cancer which we didn't know he had since he NEVER went to the doctor. Ugh.
Just shaking as I write this.
-
Oh dear, Wally - no clue that prostate CA was present? I don't know much about bone mets from that type of primary but I think they are probably highly treatable, similar to those of us with BC.
Hopefully he will get a plan in place soon so you can relax a little and focus on being a supportive spouse!
-
Vlnrph, thank you. Statistics look awful for older men with advanced prostate. 30% for 5 year survival...that's if you are lucky. Poor guy is on the medical hamster wheel that us gals know only too well. He's much older than I am and we have had a great life together. I nagged for years that he ought to go for routine exams, but it fell on deaf ears. I'm not that good about going myself (every ache and pain, as most here, I am convinced is news I don't want to hear). Maybe some of the newer treatments for bone mets in women will help...we can hope. Thank you again.
-
Oh, wallycat, certainly news you did not want to hear! Sending you (((hugs))) for strength as you travel the medical hamster wheel with him. Know that we are here for you-- and feel free to vent here whenever that would help you.
-
Wallycat, I am so sorry that your husband is dealing with that. Hoping his cancer responds well to treatments and get him to NED.
-
I have had hip pain (both sides) for over 2 years and my oncologist told me it would be incompetent of him to order scans before other more probable causes were ruled out. Almost the opposite of your Onc. And consistent with your current course of action.
So sorry to hear about your husband. Please take care of yourself while you take care of him!!
-
DH has been handling the treatments well, so far. I'm trying to take care of myself...in between feeling confidant and stress-eating. OY. I doubt he will ever be NED because his bones are riddled with it...a chronic condition now vs. a treatable one. So far he has little pain so that is some comfort. Thank you, ladies.

Fucancer100 hopefully you got good results from your MRI. I have been having knawing right hip pain at night for the past few months. I used to have this kind of pain before cancer, but just not nearly as persistent. I mentioned this to my breast surgeon at my follow up this morning and he wants me to get a bone scan.
-
Last year I was diagnosed with hip bursitis. My ortho injected a steroid cocktail and it felt better almost immediately. It's back, dang it. It's not so bad during the day, but five minutes after I climb into bed my hip begins its gnawing ache. The pain wakes me up several times during the night. Sammi2006 I bet yours is the same thing but your breast surgeon is being appropriately cautious.
-
Bursitis is common, I had it a few years ago. Hopefully that's what it is, Sammi2006! My doctor gave me a few exercises to do that have kept it away ever since. sbelizabeth, here's a link to the exercises that helped me, especially the lying lateral leg raises: https://www.healthline.com/health/fitness-exercise/hip-bursitis-exercises#hip-bridges
-
SummerAngel, thank you so much! I saw the ortho today and she injected my hip with lidocaine and steroid. It's feeling better already but I want to be proactive and prevent another flare. I will definitely do these exercises.
