Waiting for biopsy
hello,
I am 37 years old and just was told they found a 1cm mass on my left breast by theMRI that was done with contrast. I have an ultrasound core guided biopsy scheduled for next week.
Has anyone had experience where something like this is not cancer? Is there anything else a MRI with contrast would detect like this?
Thank you

Hi MelissaAshley -
I am sorry that this is happening, and is such a worry. Was the MRI the first test, or follow-up to a mammogram?
MRI’s alone can find many things - which makes them helpful - but also pick up things that are benign. It’s also harder if there are no prior MRI tests to compare back against. Just wondering if the MRI was the first line of testing, or a follow-on to another test? This information might help some of the other sweet ladies on this board share useful info.
Please keep us posted.
Wishing you the very, very best of luck. Love, Belle xx

Belle,
Thank you so very much for your reply. This was a routine screening MRI as I am high risk because of my family... my Dr. has me have an MRI every 2 years and a mammogram every year. My last MRI was in 2017 and was normal... my last mammogram was also normal but I have very dense breasts so may have missed..
Would love to hear any insight or others who have had similar experiences...good or bad... the wait is absolutely awful.
Thank you so much, Melissa

Melissa - The waiting definitely tests our good humor and patience
The good thing is that virtually every person here totally gets what you are stepping through right now - and will offer info, support and kindness. Your doctor sounds diligent - and most with cancer / family history will get lots of testing to keep disease at bay. Let’s see what the other ladies say - and know that you are never alone while you wait. Everyone here gets it. I will keep up with you - try and post when you can. xx

Sorry about that duplicate post!! x

Hi Melissa,
I am sorry that you are going through this. I know just how awful it is. The waiting is absolutely the worst part. MRI's are highly sensitive, and there are a lot of false positives. I had an MRI, that found a tumor in my right breast that was cancerous. However, the MRI said it was much larger than it actually was. Also, the MRI, found 3 possible tumors in my left breast that were all biopsied and found to be benign, so that is certainly a possibility. I hope that your results come in very soon, and it is all good news. Please keep us posted.

Thank you so much for the reply. Much appreciated. Will keep updating after the biopsy xx

I was just talking yesterday to my cousin who had a biopsy after an MRI found a lump. It was benign. We are high risk . Benign results def. come back all the time. Waiting is the WORST! - big hugs.
-
I just called my Dr for more details about my MRI results. She informed me that it is BiRad 4. Has anyone been classified with this level but it turned out to be something other than cancer? Biopsy is in 3 days... it can’t come soon enough..
-
The only thing that BIRADs4 means is that a biopsy is recommended. If your imaging had been a BIRADs3, the recommendation would have been short-term (usually 6 month) follow-up, not a biopsy. So the vast majority of people who have a breast biopsy have imaging that's been assessed as being BIRADs4.
The range of malignancy for BIRADs4 goes from 2% - 95%. Anything with an assessed risk of less than 2% is BIRADs3 and anything with an assessed risk of over 95% is BIRADs5.
Overall, 20% - 25% of BIRADs4 biopsies turn out to be malignant while 75% - 80% end up being benign.

Thank you Beesie. This info is very helpful and appreciated

Glad to help.
Good luck with the biopsy. Hope yours is one of the many than turn out to be benign!

I am scheduled for a biopsy tomorrow. BIRADS CATG 4. And I am beyond freaking out!
I had a Screening Mammogram last week and there was an area of concern in my right breast. Today, I had a Diagnostic Mammogram, and an Ultra-Sound. The findings are:
There are heterogeneously dense fibroglandular elements in the right breast. The previously questioned asymmetric nodular density located laterally in the right breast on the 9:00axis persist with spot compression imaging. No associated calcification or architectural distortion. Limited right breast ultrasound was performed along the 8-9 o'clock axis. In the 9:00position there is a 1.0 x 0.8 x 0.8 cm hypoechoic nodular density present likely corresponding with the mammographic finding. no internal color Doppler flow. There is an adjacent 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.8 hypoechoic nodular density in the 10.00 position right breast. Recommend ultra-sound-guided core bipsy of these areas. Right breast BI_RADS Category 4, suspicious abnormality. These may reflect a complex cyst or fibroadenomas however ultrasound core biopsy is recommended for further evaluation.
Can someone please help me to understand what all of this means, in layman's terms (simple Non-Doctor, English) ? Please. Thank you in advance.

Cindy, I responded to your question in your other thread:
-
Thank you. I'm heading to the hospital, for my biopsy now.
-
Hope all goes well! Mine is tomorrow, please let us know how it goes! Sending all my best

ok so I just got home from my core needle biopsy. The actually biopsy was not as bad as I imagined.
I was grilling the radiologist for any information she could give. She said it looked like cancer because of the edges and placement etc .. when she pulled out the samples though one was soft. She said that’s a good thing? Has anyone had a similar experience?
She gave me a list of surgeons and said to be proactive and call for a consult. I just wish I had concrete answers! With this long weekend I would know until Tuesday :
