Abscess or not?
So I’m a non-smoking, non-diabetic, non-lactating 38yo (BF for 2 years and my kid is 4) and several months ago found a perfectly round lump. I waited a couple cycles to see if it went away but to my surprise, it drained pus, decompressed, and I flushed it and it healed fine. well now I have another lump and made an appt. showed up and “oh your appt is NEXT week” so I went to immediate care that night.
It was comical. I think the make NP was uncomfortable with the anatomical location. 🤣 but his eyes widened when he saw the lump, heat and redness and said “oh I’m not sure that’s an abscess you need to be referred to a general surgeon”. He turned to the wall and said “you can uh, put your, uh, shirt back on”. I should have had fun with it and said “oh you mean put my boob away?” He prescribed abx and had the nurse give me a nice big stingy ab shot in my butt, (after saying I was JUST waiting on paperwork! 😡)
There hasn’t been much change since a week ago when the antibiotics were started. There isn’t much pain. I saw the surgeon this morning and he did an FNA and poked the 3cm lump in all sorts of ways, but only got a TINY amount of what appeared to be purulent fluid. I was surprised. I expected fluid. And then there would be no more lump. I also expected it to hurt more than that antibiotic shot but it was alright! No lidocaine even. He said we could wait on cultures and see if the right antibiotic was chosen or we could get it all over with sooner with incision and drainage and biopsy if anything looks neoplastic. I chose the recommended later, which is scheduled for Tuesday next week.
Am I crazy for not going the conservative approach? I want it to be done, and I know it’s pretty unlikely to just go away with antibiotics if it’s a large loculated abscess , and since it won’t decompress with a needle, it would probably end up with surgical drainage anyway. And this way I get definitive results that it is or isn't “just” an abscess.
Anyone had a surgical drainage procedure who can share what recovery time was like? I forgot to ask.
Since no fluid was found, I keep wondering about the little details about my case that are giving the drs suspicions they may be dealing with something else! But I guess I just gotta have fun and look forward to my propofol nap in the meantime.

Randomusername, reading your post reminded me of my story. it happened in around 2009 when i found a small pus filled projection right on my right nipple. i had never experienced any such thing and was really stressed in a matter of days it grew in size to almost double of my entire right nipple. there were all the signs of inflammation redness, pain, heat, everything. i was too shy to show my boob to anyone and also because i had acne i decided to squeeze the pus out of the thing on my own. i took leave from college, locked myself in the bathroom and used all my force and strength to drain the pus, after much crying and wailing the pus came out and eventually all the symptoms also settled.
2 years after this incidence i again had a similar experience at the same spot. this time i gathered courage and spoke to my elder sister, who is a gynecologist .she had a look at the pus and exclaimed it to be an abscess, she asked me to get it drained immediately. so we rushed to her hospital and got it drained under local anesthesia. it was nicely done, i was given antibiotics and it healed soon.
It just didn't stopped there and i got another one again, this time also i got it surgically drained, and i felt better later.so, in nutshell i would just say that yes post surgery you might have to be careful while taking shower, or lifting weights as you will have a surgical dressing which you need to change every day and there can be difficulty wearing a bra, but in a matter of few days it would all be sorted.
I hope my story could help.
