DIEP and Lymphedema

Hi,

I had a DIEP flap done in December 2010 and most axillary lymph nodes removed during my mastectomy in 2009. I originally tried implants, but they failed because of my radiation. After the DIEP, the plastic surgeon said lymphedema should not be a problem due to the procedure done (I had minimal lymphedema in my hand after the mastectomy which was no longer present after the DIEP.).

As recommended after the mastectomy and implants, I was told to wear a compression garment for flights. I have continued to do this for flights and am wondering if this is necessary.

I am curious if someone who has had a DIEP flap could share there experience. Are you wearing a compression garment for flights routinely? Or, do you only put it on if you notice any swelling afterwards (which I definitely prefer not to do.)?

Thanks

I had DIEP and I do not have active LE. I did have some cording develop. The cording was resolved by physical therapy. I was advised to wear a compression garment for flights. The compression garment I have is the lowest level of compression and does not bother me when I fly. I have also been advised to wear the compression garment when I do upper body workouts.
