BiRad 5 and biopsy done
So after feeling a large lump on my left breast, I had it checked by the doctor and was sent to the imaging center for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. It came back as a BiRad 5 and a spiculated mass with microcalcifications and measured 2.5cm with a large area of distortion. I decided to have my biopsy done at an NCI center where they have to review the report before the biopsy. This radiologist said the mass was 4cm with coarse calcifications and again highly suspicious of malignancy, although I didn’t see a BiRad listed. After the core needle biopsy, she also did a punch biopsy which had not been brought up before. I’m guessing she also thinks it’s cancer as I was given a card for a breast care navigator and told she would call me next week. The results were supposed to be in yesterday, but I haven’t heard anything.
Is it normal for 2 different radiologists to have 2 pretty different ideas on the size of the mass? Is the one that did the biopsy including the area of distortion as the mass? I saw this report last night, so didn’t get to ask her as I had the biopsy done Thursday. Thanks

Deenster, did the the NCI center do new imaging or just review those done by the other place? Was your biopsy by ultrasound or stereotactic? Was the punch biopsy of your skin or a lymph node or the mass

The NCI center reviewed the images previously done and interpreted by the other radiologist. The biopsy was by ultrasound, and the punch appears to have been done in the same area as the core biopsy. After the biopsy, I had to get an additional mammogram to make sure the marker was in place, then at the last minute the radiologist ordered some extra images while I was in there. During the biopsy, she asked me several times if I ever had any type of breast surgery, which I haven’t. She said it looked like there was a scar, and even showed the nurse. I’ve never seen anything like a scar, and still don’t. I’ve never had any trauma that would have caused a scar

The review, plus using the ultrasound to biopsy plus the extra images is probably why the opinions differ on size of area. As to the rest, I don’t know. When do they expect your results back? I know waiting is really hard

She thought the results would be back yesterday since the biopsy was done early on Thursday, but I didn’t hear anything. Now my mind is playing games that it’s taking longer because it’s more complicated. The limbo is killing me! Thanks for your help

Hang in there Deenster...waiting for the biopsy results is very hard. Take care.

It sure is. The results came Monday, and unfortunately wasn’t the news I was hoping for. Triple positive IDC grade 2. I see the BS tomorrow.

Deenster--sorry to hear that but come join us on the Triple Positive thread!!
