Help Waive the SSDI and Medicare Waiting Periods!

Greetings!

As some of us may know, metastatic breast cancer patients who apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) must wait 5 months to receive it, and then wait two years for Medicare coverage. This causes undue financial hardship, especially since the average prognosis for these patients is 3 years (this figure seems to be improving, but it still remains the official statistic). Recently, bills that would remove these waiting periods are being mobilized for introduction in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. You can support these bills by writing to your Congressperson and to your Senators. (It is hoped that, over time, people with other types of metastatic cancers may likewise benefit from the precedent being set by these bills if they pass).

Below are detailed instructions on how to locate your legislators, and the letters to forward to them.

Thank you for your consideration, and hopefully this endeavor will be successful!

To find the name of your Representative in the House, enter your zip code on the upper right corner of this site: https://www.house.gov/ Then press on your Representative's name, which will take you to their website where you can call or email.

To find the names of your Senators, choose your state from the drop-down list on this website: https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact Then press on your Senator's name, which will take you to their website where you can call or email.

Below are sample letters for your Representative and your Senators.

Dear <Congressperson's Name>,

I write today as a constituent and as an advocate for the metastatic cancer community to ask that your office please cosponsor the bipartisan Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act (H.R. 2178).

Currently, metastatic cancer patients who apply for disability and Medicare coverage must wait 5 months to receive Social Security Disability Insurance and another two years for Medicare coverage. Given that the average prognosis for a metastatic breast cancer patient is only three years, this waiting period is untenable.

This common-sense legislation would waive the waiting periods for these patients. To cosponsor H.R. 2178, please reach out to Deena Tauster in Cong. Peter King's office at deena.tauster@mail.house.gov or 5-7896 or Elizabeth Brown in Cong. Kathy Castor's office at elizabeth.brown@mail.house.gov or 5-3376. At the very least, please support this legislation in the House.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

<your name>

Dear <Senator's Name>,

I write today as a constituent and as an advocate for the metastatic cancer community to ask that your office please cosponsor the bipartisan Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act (S. 1374).

Currently, metastatic cancer patients who apply for disability and Medicare coverage must wait 5 months to receive Social Security Disability Insurance and another two years for Medicare coverage.Given that the average prognosis for a metastatic breast cancer patient is only three years, this waiting period is untenable.

This common-sense legislation would waive the waiting periods for these patients. To cosponsor S. 1374, please reach out to Emily Crow in Sen. Martha McSally's office at Emily_Crow@mcsally.senate.gov or 4-2235 or Elizabeth Darnell in Sen. Chris Murphy's office at Elizabeth_Darnall@murphy.senate.gov or 4-4041. Great idea, Bestbird! I used to work for SSA and was one of the pilot states for the compassionate allowance program that expedites disability decisions for terminally and critically ill people. Unfortunately, I had several people with cancer die during the processing of their claims, which is heartbreaking. I can attest that strong and vocal advocacy groups for ESRD (end stage renal disease) and ALS resulted in those two conditions having the 2 year Medicare wait period waived. We have a strong and vocal community, too!

I have contacted my reps (by phone). I don't know how far it really got since I spoke to someone working in the offices. I also keep tabs on the progress of the Bills in the House and Senate but they have not made it very far---still in Committees after being Introduced. Sorry to say, I don't really know the process to get a Bill through the steps in the House and Senate or how long it usually takes for the process. Looks to me like they haven't made it very far. You can find the Bills at Congress.gov---House-HR 2178 Senate-S 1374.

What else can we do?? Anyone with more ideas.

Thank you Bestbird for starting this Thread.

So as I said in my post above I called my Senate Rep a few weeks ago to voice my support of the Bill. Today I received an email from my Senator. Thanking me for supporting Protection of Medicare and Social Security for the citizens of the U.S. And talked about Medicare cuts. No where in his email was there mention of this Bill or Metastatic Breast Cancer. This was my email response to him. I doubt he sees it but I was not going to not reply. I don't know if our voices are going to make a difference.

I DID NOT CALL YOU ABOUT MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY CUTS. I CALLED IN SUPPORT OF HOUSE BILL HR. 2178, SENATE BILL S.1374. CONCERNING WAIVING THE WAITING PERIOD FOR COVERAGE TO METASTATIC BREAST CANCER PATIENTS. I AM A METASTATIC BREAST CANCER PATIENT AND STATISTICALLY THE 5 YEAR SURVIVAL RATE IS 26%. OUR LADIES FIGHTING THIS HORRID DISEASE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR MEDICARE COVERAGE WHEN ACCEPTED TO SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY. NEITHER SHOULD THEY HAVE TO WAIT FOR 6 MONTHS BEFORE RECEIVING THEIR PAYMENTS.

WITH THE ABOVE LETTER, MY CONFIDENCE IN YOU AND YOUR STAFF IS WANING. OBVIOUSLY YOU DID NOT PAY ATTENTION TO MY PHONE CALL.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS EMAIL AND GET THE BILL MOVING IN CONGRESS. WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO WAIT FOR THE BUREAUCRATS IN WASHINGTON TO DO THEIR JOBS.

    THANK YOU.

candy-678, it's a shame that legislators and/or their staff do not take the time to read their constituents' letters, and kudos to you for your rejoinder! Everything we write and say matters, and our voices can make a difference!
