Breast pain after lumpectomy and radiation

I was diagnosed with DCIS last year. I had a lumpectomy and then another surgery due to not having clear margins. I ended up with a decent sized seroma (collection of fluid) which delayed radiation a couple of months. I finally had 26 radiation treatments including 6 "boost" sessions. My last radiation treatment was April 24, 2019. I had pain in my breast during radiation. Unfortunately the pain never went away. It is getting a little worse. I have what I call a throbbing pain all of the time. Ibuprofen helps dull It but it never goes away. It also hurts to the touch. Is this expected? Any end in sight? Thanks in advance!

Hi Psychknowledge - I think what I would do in your position is to first be sure my team/MO/RO whoever you follow with most often knows what is going on, how long it's been going on, and when it started. They would know best how to proceed after that.

That being said I had a terrible time with SEs from RADs. Mine ended in Oct 18, during which I went into with still some tenderness/aching from my Lumpectomy/SLNB sites. That all progressed to pain, heaviness, swelling, pitting, peeling, etc during RADs. Even though I am now nearly 8 months out, my L breast still aches/hurts and my nipple is still deciding what to be (dry/oily/scabby/sticky) on any given day. I developed Breast LE during RADs and also Fibrosis too. So my case will be different than yours.

For me, I expect my breast to ache and hurt. I still can't lay on my stomach because my breast hurts too much that way. Will probably be that way the rest of my life. But for you, even being at the end of June, which is just about 7 weeks out from your RADs ending, it's still possible for SEs to appear or worsen, according to my LE PT. Especially stiffening/shortening of muscles and changes in range of motion.

Anyway, no matter what I can offer about my story, yours is different. Best thing you can do is let your doctor know and follow up as needed. Keep us posted. Worrying and waiting is a tough time to get through. We're here.

Definitely check in with your RO. I've had rads on both sides and never had any lingering pain. (Never really had any rads-related pain even during tx.)

I finished radiation last November after a lumpectomy (twice b/c of margins, too) last September and then radiation. I had throbbing pain at the incision site on and off for months. Now, it's very sporadic-- I had an hour for one night last month. Hopefully, it is common and should decrease. Your body is still healing and your nerves have been damaged. Try not to worry, but of course ask your doctor b/c we all have our own experiences :).
