Biopsy positive but MRI negative?

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed four weeks ago with IDC after finding the lump in February. I had a biopsy of two lesions on my left side (1.7cm and 0.3cm, both of which were positive for IDC) and a biopsy on a small lump in my right, which came back negative. Also had some good news that I was not a BRCA1 or BRCA2 carrier. However, I just got back MRI results that were negative for even the original lesions. They saw the clips from my biopsies, but no masses, cancerous or otherwise. Now my husband and I are questioning everything! Is it possible to have a false negative on an MRI or might the biopsies be wrong? I can still feel the lump, by the way.

A biopsy will always over-ride imaging. Imaging can and often does miss things. That’s more unusual for an MRI, but still possible

If you are concerned you can ask for the biopsy slides to be reread by a different pathologist, but I would trust the biopsy over the MRI.

Thank you, Beesie. I was considering taking the slides for re-evaluation, just to confirm, so that’s helpful. It’s just unnerving to get that MRI result after my HMO medical group (from imaging centers to doctors) has already made a lot of mistakes throughout this whole process. Luckily, I’m starting with a new surgeon next week. Thank you!
