edited June 2019 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Hello my name is eli my question is did y'all get an order from the dr. After a breast biopsy? My mom got a biopsy the results came in but the doctor order an MRI. And if yes why is that.? I thought the biopsy can determine if its cancer or non cancerous. The doctor has Not called she has her appointment until this coming Monday so she had to wait 2 weeks. For the results but the doctor did put stat in the MRI order Now it's weird that the dr didnt called her in sooner if something bad came up. Because with me when I was diagnosed with cancer the doctor called me 5 days before my appointment. And they never order an MRI after a biopsy.

I had an MRI after the biopsy but before my lumpectomy. My understanding was that it was ordered to see whether there were any other areas of concern in my breasts that might also require investigation/biopsy/surgery. But the MRI wasn't ordered by the biopsy surgeon, it was ordered by my surgical oncologist at my first appointment with her.

I'm not really clear from your post. Did your mom get her biopsy results back yet or not?

The Dr. has the results from the biopsy already but wont give her the results until she sees her on her next appointment until Monday which Marks two weeks but the doctor order her an MRI. To me it's odd because the biopsy would determine the grade and the origin spot were the cancer has started. That's if she has it.

I had a similar experience as Salamandra did.

US guided biopsy --> phone call from my PCP with preliminary cancer dx --> MO ordered MRI & 3D Mammos --> surgery

So if I understand, your mom sees her MO next Monday? Have you asked if you/your mother could get the results over the phone?

I do know that some offices do seem to not want to give bad news over the phone. IDK the situation but I'm sorry you and your family are going through this stressful time. Waiting is such a hard phase to go through.

Please keep us posted. Hoping the results are benign.

I also had an MRI between the biopsy and surgery. It's just another tool for the surgeon to use to determine size and location. The breast center I used makes everything so easy; after the mammogram results, they got me an scheduled for an ultrasound and biopsy (if needed, which it was), then the next appointment was with one of their breast surgeons in the same location. The oncologist they referred me to was the same one my PCP had wanted to send me to for a screening for something else, so all I had to do was change the appointment day until I had the biopsy results. I know a lot of places require the patient to do all their doctor and testing shopping on their own, but I loved being gently handed off to the next person/procedure without added stress. Some places might do the appointments and tests in a slightly different order.

see I wish our expierence was like y'all this doctor does not give results by phone which I understand. But at least call her sooner than be waiting the two weeks. My mom and myself are very nervous because like I mention this doctor didnt even called her in sooner for the results. My self and other people I know have experienced otherwise my urologist call me sooner didnt have to wait until my appointment he called me in like 5 days sooner before my appointment which I mention in the thread. This doctor is just a doctor the state choose for my mom because my mom has not have insurance so the state pays part of it but she still has to pay out of pocket. I'm just very upset this doctor is ordering things without telling my mom was exactly she has.

    That is super frustrating.

If you are located in the USA, I believe that you have a right to your results, though you may have to go in person to get them. There was a snafu with the communication between my biopsy center and my gyn's office, and I ended going in person to the radiology place and getting handed an envelope. You might also be able to get them to share the results with a different doctor who would turn it around to you fast.

Sometimes I think these folks (some of them) don't have enough empathy for what it's like to be in the patients' shoes.

I am very spoiled, my oncologist calls immediately when he gets lab results. I had a biopsy on a Wednesday I think and my oncologist called me at 7:30 pm on Friday evening to report it was benign. I was very grateful not to have to worry all weekend. The waiting is excruciating the wondering, when I got my cancer diagnosis the radiologist called me right away and told me I had ILC. That was all she had at that time my breast surgeon had more details when I went for an appointment. I really appreciate when they understand you need to know.

I also had an MRI after biopsy, before surgery in 2016. It was ordered by my breast surgeon because I didn't have an oncologist that time around. The MRI was to make sure there weren't any other areas of concern in either breast, which is important to know before surgery. Be aware they have a high rate of false positives--something like 30%. I'm sorry this seems to be taking so long for your mother.

Thats just unacceptable, If I were you Id drive to the dr's office and demand the results. Its cruel of them to hold onto them while you wait for the next appointment.

Wishing you the best of luck!

I echo the waiting is brutal and also agree 2 weeks is too long to wait. Unfortunately it sounds like your mother is at the mercy of a no insurance-state controlled category. That’s blatantly unfair but I know where I live they move the uninsured patients to the end of the line unless they fork over the costs upfront. Ditto if you take your case to court without a lawyer.

I didn’t have a MRI so I can’t speak to that issue. I know several ladies who did though and it was for the reasons others have mentioned. It does have a lot of false positives though.

I don’t wait well anyway so I would be down at the doctors office to try and get your mom’s results. I did get a phone call 2 days after my biopsy.

    Good luck. Keep us posted.
