    Hi Leslieva-

I have nipple envy! I have feeling coming back to my breasts.... does it hurt??

I’m really excited for it. I don’t care if it hurts just wondering your experience? I’m assuming they give you a local.

Breast Reconstruction is the only thing that kept my sane during this process! My PS is a godsend!!

CBK, the nip recon was surgery along with fat grafting so I was under anesthesia in a surgical center. The tattoos were done in the artist’s studio. I felt some pressure but no pain. And it only took around 15 minutes!

Hi Ladies, I've been a member here since 2011 - I also tattoo 3D Nipples/areolas in Los Angeles www.inkbyroseann.com. I'm happy to answer anyone's questions regarding this procedure.. Thanks ladies and happy Sunday :-)

    Leslieva and Jackster

When they do 3D tattooing do you need to go back periodically to refresh the color? I’m assuming the procedure may take a couple sessions to get it right?

My PS wants me to settle for 6 to 9 months before she does finishing revisions and tattooing ! I’ve had a lot of work done over past years!

CBK - Usually it is a 2 session process spaced about 4 weeks apart. The 2nd session is for more detail work and to fill in anywhere that might not have taken so well. Some patients do ok with 1 session, but 2 is more typical.. And yes, I like to wait at least 6 months out of treatment and surgeries before a tattoo.. Just to give the body and skin time to heal itself. After the 2nd session you should be good without any further need for more tattoo work. The good thing is that nipples "usually" :-). stay out of the sun which is what causes most fading in regular body tattoo's.

    Thanks Jackster

Do you use lidocaine to numb? I do have some sensation on the foobs. And yes my nipples don’t plan on seeing the light of day!

CBK - Yes if a pre-numb is needed it is used.. We check for sensitivity... Many women don't need any numbing cream after surgery but we have it and use it for those that do.

I am 5 weeks out from nipple surgery and while neither graft for lower areola took, the non radiated side is almost healed (after I kid you not looking like leatherface meets dead Frankenstein grayish black. disgusting!). My radiated side is still partially open, not infected thank God but I'm so sick of Neosporin, nonstick pads, gauze and tape!!! Im 40/60 thinking this was a waste of time for a lot of stress managing this crap. I'm so worried the slow healing, tenderness, bleeding is just going to kick off another recurrence. it's obvious to me I did this more for my self consciousness around my husband than me.

    =(

The nipples are a bit better than I hoped for but they have been so much work and worry. I don't know if I will ever have confidence to finish with tattoos. Has anyone else taken so long to heal?

You should try Medihoney, 7 of 9. It is amazing stuff for healing. It's kind of messy, but works better than anything else I've ever tried.

You should be able to find it on Amazon.

    Best wishes.

Did you just do nipple reconstruction or were there other revisions involved?

I developed cellulitis after nipple reconstruction and they were draining 4-ever. I am a couple weeks shy of 3 months and they are just starting to look really nice.

That said, I didn’t have any tenderness! But a lot of draining for months. I used maxi pads taped into my bra cups and changed them twice a day. So much easier than gauze and tape. Cut one thin pad in half!

Ohhh I hope as they heal you will be happier. I had some pretty scary looking moments with mine early on!!

    Wishing you much healing!

7of9, I’m sorry you’re having such a rough time with the nip reconstruction. But all the healing issues you’re having won’t cause a recurrence of your cancer.

CBK... Anyone who has gone thru any phase of breast reconstruction knows what you are doing is NOT crazy! We may all make different decisions about how we want to look / feel / be and that is just perfect.

I think "letting be" for a few months is a very wise choice.

Hi. This is a fascinating thread. Adding to my favorites.

I'm scheduled for BMX, SNB, and TE's on July 8. I've decided to say goodbye to my nipples and get 3D tattoos later. Lucky for me, I live about 10 miles from Vinnie Meyers's tattoo parlor in MD.

(LOL. That is the last thing I ever thought BC would have me saying. )

    Cheers.

Coach Vicky- Well funny thing is one person that said just leave it alone and don’t do nipple reconstruction had BMX, reconstruction and tattooing. She thought it was nuts I was doing grafting reconstruction! Not that it would have changed my decision in the least .. since throughout my reconstruction I intuitively knew what I was going to do! But it certainly helps to have supportive people by your side. Thank you for your words.

Happyperidot- Good luck with your surgery on the 8th! May it be easeful as well as recovery drama-free!

Dang Happyp ... you are one lucky woman! If I lived near Vinnie I would have touch-ups annually!

my remaining nipple still has some sensation in it so I have been hesitant to use it to reconstruct the missing one, as the ps has suggested. But I’m realizing the sensation is kind of uncomfortable so maybe I won’t mind if it’s lost after reconstruction. I still go back and forth bw reconstructing the missing nipple or doing a 3D tattoo

I had my nipples created during a revision surgery that I needed and was so happy that I could have it done and I like the looks of them. however, the left one did flatten out a bit more than I like. Approximately a year-and-a-half ago I went to Vinnie down in New Orleans and had my nipple tattoos done and I don't know that they'll ever need touch ups.. I had skin-sparing mastectomy and I was surprised that I actually felt some pain during the left breast tattoo but no pain on the right LOL he does not feel that I will ever need touch-ups. However, I might because my stitches that we're supposed to dissolve kept coming through the skin after I had my tats done so there are these funny lines in my areola area.

I had my pre-op appt with the PS yesterday. I told him I'm ok with losing my nipples and getting tattoos. He reminded me it's really up to the BS and warned that sometimes the skin sparring MX results in a horizontal seam/scar that undermines a good cosmetic result. I might end up with a flattish breast instead of a natural-looking mound.

Has anyone experienced this? How bad is it?

    Happyperidot-

It's your BS call if the tumor removal would be compromised via nipple sparing.. I was 49 at time of BMX and my BS said AOK on Nipple sparing MX, But PS said not going to be a good outcome based on your sagging boobs... HA! I was quite large for my tiny frame and off they came...

I have a horizonal incision... no idea what that means about being flat... I am hardly flat... in fact I wore a new fitted yoga top today to morning yoga and later to the gym .. I was actually thinking... Whoa! Pretty impressive two years after this whole thing, I am stacked!!

Happy ... I think your PS sounds gloomy. Talk NOW with your BS and get these 2 on the same page.

I had skin sparing BMX and nipples removed.

My outcome, like CBK, is better than before!

    Happy

I had skin sparing with nipples removed. Love my outcomes...scar was not long at all...less than half an inch showing outside the tattooed areola (thanks to a great BS)a, and with all of the fat grafting etc. My PS did a great job too. My BS and PS worked as a team during my initial surgery...

Scrafgal- how many fat grafting episodes did you have?? I just had my first alot 2 weeks ago, yes i know i need to wait for swelling to go down, but thinking I'll need more. Were each of the episodes a hospital visit to get it done??

I hope all you ladies are doing great and continue to kick cancer's ass!!🥊🥊

Ladies I need some help here.

When you all discuss that “medical grade" tattooing is inferior to tattoo artists that specialize in nipple tattooing, can you enlighten me?

I'm not sure but I think my PS might do her 3D tattooing in her officeand I want to ask the right questions.

I love my PS and her nurse and not to finish this whole journey with them all would leave me feeling so empty! I would have not made it through without my PS kindness, humor and trusted advice on everything BC!

I had 3 surgeries (10/17, 5/18 and 5/19) that included fat grafting and other procedures (implants, breast lift on natural side). Each was done at the hospital where I was treated (MD Anderson). During each surgery, my PS grafted the fat and used it for contouring during the surgery, as well as completed the other procedures. It does pay to let things settled in between. Usually about 6 months. However, since I teach, I tended to schedule my surgeries in May, when the school year is over. The fat was added on both the mastectomy side and my natural side, in various areas on both side, over time, to get the volume and contouring correct. I am really happy with the results...it has been a long journey!

Hi, thankful for this discussion. Dx 2014, chemo then unilateral with reconstruction done in same year. Previously, I had wanted a nipple tattoo once breast settled. Fast forward to now, found out by accident through MRI that implant ruptured.

Just finished implant exchange, and now my reconstruction is pretty much matching my breast. Anyway, I’m looking for something noninvasive and pain free option for a nipple. Googled prosthetic, but need some more info. Anyone know if it’s covered by insurance? Do u need a prescription/note from oncologist or plastic? Where’s the best place to get/purchase?

I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Izzyfran, I just ordered some from Pink Perfect. They are amazing!!! So real looking. And they have stayed on during shower, swimming and sex. They give you all the info for your insurance company.

I got bilateral 3-D nipple tattoos by Vinnie Myers a couple of weeks ago and am extremely pleased with the outcome. I trusted him as to size, coloring, and placement and he was exactly right on all counts. I was glad I decided not to have NAC reconstruction -- the tattoos were the right decision for me. It only took a little over an hour total. DH likes them too. :) While it wasn't completely pain-free, it didn't hurt much, and in fact I was kind of encouraged by the fact that I could feel it because it tells me I am regaining some sensation on both sides.
